Is being male and white not a factor in your analysis. Just looking statistically at the segment of the demographic which directly correlates with wealth and entrepreneurship paints a different story from your narrative.

Counterpoint, would you buy a machine in 2020 to service as a developer laptop or desktop with 8 gb of ram and 512 gb of storage? Saying that the premiums are "just the upgrades" sort of ignores what those upgrades actually are an

How is that a fair point. Developers don't WANT bespoke frameworks that lock you into a single ecosystem. We would obviously prefer open standards and specifications supported by multiple vendors. The popularity of frameworks such as F

We still use devkits because you cannot possibly develop a console game without one. They provide detailed hardware accelerated instrumentation, and also have specialized hardware that you can't emulate without a dramatic perf hit. The

You’re being sarcastic... but your premise is wrong. I can build for windows and android from linux without issue. I can build for linux and android from windows without issue. I pay nothing in any direction.

It keeps inching closer. You now have a unified arch between mobile and desktop. You were never officially able to cross compile before and now there’s yet another barrier. Phoned signing verification is another thing that is a precursor to

There will be a day when all apps on a mac will only be installable from the app store. Developers will be forced to buy macs and subscribe to Apple’s developer program to support it. Customers will be trained to not care. And HN Apple fanb

I use Linux and Windows. If Windows is an idea of a "sick joke," consider how much processing power and capability you're leaving on the table. Just losing the first-party GPU driver alone costs you. It costs you more for RAM

I'm a graphics engineer. It's so low end at this point I honestly dread benchmarking on it.

Sure, but if you read the comments here you'd think the M1 GPU was state of the art or something.

lol what's hilarious is the numbers probably go up just by installing windows and using the actual first-party nvidia driver.

What is tempting about this? This benchmark shows that the M1 performs marginally worse than the low-end sku from 3 generations ago.

I think you’re really cherry picking here. Most developers that frequent “caniuse” most likely encounter lack if safari support above every other browser. Also have you seen webgl 2? What a joke from the webkit team. Yes webgpu is on the wa

You do not fundamentally understand the argument, which is that a freer market with the ability to charge for and ship software outside of the app store (like is done on Windows/Mac) would be better for consumers.

During WWII, IBM supplied the Nazis with mainframe computers and were responsible for untold deaths in exchange for money. It's not that black and white.
