In TFA they mention a insightful case study: “Most clinical trials try to track every single possible data point about patients, thus inflating costs. But Landry and Horby’s trial could carefully strip down the data needed to the essentials

As Derek Lowe summarized in the accompanying blogpost[0], the main recommendations of this article are: “better decisions about what data to collect and better ways to collect it.” Yeah, sometimes people dont get their point across very wel

It’s a regular failure mode in human interactions. Just because someone is attractive/charismatic/sincere doesn’t mean they should be taken seriously, and just because someone is ugly/inarticulate/creepy doesn’t mean the

I put it down to a lack of focus. Research universities had one job, to ensure the undelayed success of someone (or collective) like Yitang Zhang/Katalin Kariko, and it failed, while managing to award tenure to many a downright incomp

This is my first experience with Amazon Video; I went in with the expectation that the producers would cut corners somewhere. I am glad they did it with the CGI and sets. The costumes (good guys at least) seem acceptably Gibson. Thought the

As a scientist on HN, I usually start scrolling from the bottom of threads to find those overlooked comments by domain experts. Then upvote them even if I’m not certain that they speak the truth. Maybe that is unethical but I want to encour

I don’t know of any physicist or CScientist who makes use of parallel universes in their thinking or publications. They may invoke the mystique to impress outsiders though.

D-wave’s claim to fame is a Quantum Annealer, and that term itself is misleading as quantum annealing is strictly speaking a classical algorithm (albeit quantum- inspired ) https://cs.stackexchange.com/questions/11218

Speaking as an quantum computing academic, I would suggest that money should be redirected from quantum computing into all kinds of biotech, except quantum computing based biotech. There’s never too little money invested in biotech research

I’m an academic quantum computing guy, and the consensus in my quasilocal community is that D-wave is, appropriately for TFA, borderline fraudulent.

Gerard used the subtle term “social position”. People might take that to be “affluence” but it isnt necessary so. For example, a technically promising white child from any californian public school would be in a vastly better social positio

I wish the author paid some attention to the Virtues, which are central to Stoicism. I would find any rebuttal of the idea “Virtues are All You Need” more engaging (even if unconvincing). He even seems to be advocating for hedonism (as anot

Do you have links to textual literature? I am guessing its blue for reasons similar to why glacial ice (not melts, thats rock flour) is blue. For glacial ice, there are no air bubbles to mess with the selective transmission of blue light.
