   network.http.proxy.pipelining = true Seems to make browsing through a Squid proxy (3.1.*+) much faster. Tried it with Polipo too, but I've been experiencing crashes (of polipo) with proxy pipelining.

   Try Gentoo/Alt. I used it to get up-to-date GNU stuff in a Solaris environment. You don't even need root access. Highly recommended, it's very flexible. Gentoo being Gentoo, you need some skills, though.

   'mcabber' is a nice console-based Jabber client, this fits your SSH scheme. 'talk' on unix-based machines is a possibility but just isn't as nice as Jabber. You could also just use any old X11 Jabber client over X11-over-SSH.
