I don't think d3 or protovis explicitly pack any actual map data as part of the framework, no. But you could certainly make use of the kml with d3 to produce maps.

No, 120,000,000 people who might benefit from apps built by others on the open data. It is good IMO for a rep to fight for legislation that helps local businesses when that action serves his constituents as a group over the long term. That'

Seems like a pretty clear message to stop doing something similar to android device manufacturers. The (my perception) growing use of patents in this manner is really distasteful but what's a company to do? Not fire back on principal?

Well its not about individual ownership its about businesses testing commercial self driving cars right? Seems to me that a company is going to need to sink many millions in to design, build, and test a truly road safe self driving car no?

Respectfully, you are wrong. The realities of human biology don't all fit into neat little boxes. With no evidence presented you dismiss the entire body of scientific evidence which backs the rather basic idea that depression, like any othe

I definitely agree that many of the permissions are far too broad. I'd like to see send SMS silently separate from send SMS with user approval. I guess what I'm advocating here is a combined approach - up front permission notification of an

Funny that's one of the cases where I'd envisioned using such a feature. I wrote a private logging mechanism into my apps to capture the data I write to log seperatly so my support request option can include some just-for-this-app logs with

Side question about ios I wonder about. If you buy an app and install it, but then find it needs to use some permission you're not comfortable with can you get your money back or are you just out of.luck?

That's a bit hyperbolic. My android apps don't ask for permissions they don't need nor do many others. I think the android permission system is sane and reasonably functional. It's the users responsibility to read the requested permissions

That's one of my two must reads on this incident. I can't think of a better examples of how visualization illiteracy can contribute to disaster. The other one is Feynman's account of the investigation afterwards http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw

Funny... I assumed the punchline was going to be about the hours it takes a developer to get back into high productivity mode after interruption. Sure, bosses and customers frequently underestimate the amount of time these sort of calls tak

I'm pretty sure the new column store indexing in SQL server is enterprise edition only (not even in the new bi license) which in my experience prices out a lot of small businesses. Might be a niche in there somewhere to be served.

Fair point. Total cost may be lower with this approach than the current situation where textbook manufacturers leverage their position and IMO significantly overcharge their often captive audience. So assuming the ipads can be kept in worki

I think its true that you can't "rationalize away" suicidal thoughts but what you can do is provide an opportunity to recognize your or a loved one's extreme depression and start the process of getting help. That's how I read this post —

Sadly I agree. Its also why I'm not too concerned that my n1 wont get a supported upgrade - I'll be needing a device that's down where the users are to dev & test. Ics will have to wait a bit.

Wait... so your definition of whether something is "a ripoff" is based upon how commercially successful it is? So then android would by definition not be a ripoff. I must be misunderstanding your point.

You could do that, but then you compound the problem of comparing the size of slices with an additional size of circle comparison. Humans aren't good at comparing size between these kind of shapes. We're much better at comparing rectangular
