Why can't we keep our military and defense spending (read: R&D, science, etc.) top notch, and use it to fuel civilian quality of life? I never understood why we have to remove one thing to do something else. Sometimes you just need

You're right, I am being silly because I am too uneducated to really make sense of any of it. I love smart people who work on this stuff, a lot of what I take for granted is due to their efforts :)

Thanks for replying. I agree, people seem hesitant to process new information which makes me think they’re automatons. On one hand it’s good, they make excellent customers and personas. On the other hand, it’s a little sad.

I’d suggest you not wash your jeans so often. If you think they’ve gotten some gross stuff on them just hang them and spray some disinfectant spray. I wash my jeans every couple months, I just use a bucket and then hang them to dry for a co

Any code you write for your company where you’re a contractor or w2 is not “your” code. It isn’t yours, it belongs to the company. The company benefits because your code makes the models better which makes engineers more productive.

I’d argue gambling apps are much worse in terms of their damage to society, and those are everywhere today and with AI.

It’s better sure but as a power TS user it still sucks at generating better code, and consistently fucks up with generics (or doesn’t use them) or simple types sometimes.

I think climate change is legit. But I also think that a lot of it is just a mechanism to knee cap other countries from progressing. I don’t mind, because it keeps us at the top.

Yeah not denying that. Of course anyone single or without too many responsibilities can “survive” even on 100k. I’m not talking about that, because we get older and it doesn’t scale. my friend is a staff engineer who makes 240k plus stock.

It’s not surprising. They have a strong cultural identity and their whole country is far nicer and cleaner than any country I’ve been to. Most immigrants here (I live in SF) are to be completely honest, not from very strong cultural identit

LLMs will give you what you ask. Case in point I asked LLM to generate some code for me. It didn’t use generics (a language feature) and gave me some shit code. I had to prompt it several more times to give me generic code with better typin

I have a lot of friends who went to elite schools (top 5-10 in the world) for CS and some of them have gotten PIP’d or laid off. It’s not that hard to do well academically. Especially for kumon types. There’s builder types (rare af) and the

Wasn’t that my point? Innovation is mostly dead there, and it makes sense why people who want to build feel like they need to leave. Innovation is alive and thriving outside of FANG. And honestly after my experience I don’t get why anyone w

What was your rent though? I was not at FAANG, but a unicorn startup back in mid to late 2010s, and I was making 150-180k in that time, but not in SF. Rent back then for a 2br was like $2400.. Today, that same apartment goes for $4900. I am

If you join a good startup that has an actual product and real exit plan, sure. And by actual exit plan I mean an IPO, or a multi billion dollar acquisition if that doesn’t work out. I worked at a unicorn once and it worked out well. Most o

What if I told you.. Most of the actual groundwork has already been laid by passionate, actual engineers. Today big tech is just a place people go to make money, and they don’t necessarily care about long term vision. Mostly filled with the
