Nagios and I'm hating each bit of it. While it works OK but a complex configuration could be a nightmare. In our case it's a legacy from the early days and grown up organically, over a hundred machines that could be a real pain. To clean it

How do you build the hash table at the first place? "We look up the key in the hash table and get a value (referred to as v2)." Do you know Haskell a bit? Try to write your examples in real Haskell, a friendly type system helps a lot to cle

There is a huge benefit of personal bootstrap over a well documented procedure: it's personal, a first step to build a good relationship and a great team.

Thats a great article! I'm lucky enough to learned programming long years ago in a similar environment. Since then I've tried that in different companies but working culture or ego stopped these efforts at most of the time. After longs year

From Python 2.6 there is a nice multiprocessing library which based on OS processes. It's more heavyweight from the OS point of view but you don't need to worry about issues with GIL. I'm using it on an EC2 image with 8 cores and it rocks.

From hashes you'll recognize the fingerprint of the hash function but not the underlying data. Here is an example of random UIDs, generating a few user's in a row and it's obvious that it's random: random.sample(xrange(10000), 10) [88

What if there is an error or bottleneck which really counts? To say "it sucks" is rude and a very wrong way to tell but sometimes a fresh eye founds real things in code and it's a bad policy not to tell. Most of the people take it as piss o

Adding a few of these in a rack box with small HDs plus an internal hub and you have a small "datacenter" in a colocation environment for a fraction of cost. Neat.

Running cost of this is way lower than an EC2 box, even if you add a dedicated ADSL line, it's a cheap way to run automated processes.

Go straight into your final year at university. That's a right time for studies, get a degree or you will regret later. There is more then coding to be a good programmer.

Haskell is way more consistent for me, it's easier to understand and debug if comparing it to a template heavy C++ code.

With a little bit of patient you can build your own OpenBSD boot media with minimal fuss. Actually I prefer they method over others as more tinker friendly but I agree, it's a different beast.
