Hey, if we have to pay a content-agnostic version of spotify $0.000006 cents per token to a vague group of original authors, I’m all for it! But how are we going to compensate Kurt Cobain, the Beatles, Beethoven, and random sounds I heard f

Ok. I may as well come clean. For the past 36 years, I have been ingesting all of the information available to train a model called b33-j0r I didn’t mean to read your books, they were mostly trash. I’m so sorry for reading things you publis

Well yeah, you should swap capslock with the escape key, though. Worst case scenario is that you accidentally hit capscape while ranting too long, and as a bonus, YELLING ONLINE TAKES INTENTION OR INTOXICANTS. The accidental escape hits are

Woah, you have a hyperbolic screen? Haha. But you do have to project to x and y screenspace eventually, if you want to see your work. My take was pretty slanted towards vertex shader techniques rather than xyz representing cartesian spaces

Once I understood non-linear vector spaces and coordinate transformations… wait what am I saying? One day, I realized you can do cool stuff if you have geometry data as x, y, z: t = x + y; xt = sin(t); yt = cos(t); zt = sqrt(xt**2 + yt**2);

I was gonna say the same thing… except, we’re also doing it in Mountain View, SF, etc. People are scared it’s going to show their niece lewd imagery, or say the n-word. And, these things have happened. Enterprises see it as essential to pro

I irrationally think that I go to too much effort to make a point in our field with over-the-top clever stuff. Nope, I’m undertraining. Get ready for TauOS.

The book is so interesting that I actually paid full price at an airport. Highly recommended. He even talks about things that never occurred to me, like how he tried to coach his artists into a flow by making sure they had everything from t

I am! It’s on my bedside table. I also made it through the parts of his opus that were published at least 10 years ago. Between the art of computer programming and the art of electronics, man I’ve spent a prolific amount of money and time.

I just really find visual debuggers to be a modern miracle. I’m a veteran, but I run into that every time. I use nvim and pycharm. Are there new developments that could change my mind? I love the idea of all of this.

You are a friend and a scholar. I was looking for a solution in pydantic that is wildly relevant. Thanks, I didn’t realize that was implemented/existed. My only objection is using ABC in your MRO. Haha, just a little bit overloaded wit

Nice. I’ve searched far and wide, and most people still end up starting a whole company that only does a text editor. Quill works but is basically dead since 2017. Almost anything foss is in a similarly ambiguous boat. And then people like

I might have a way to simplify this? A plaintext document is an array of chars, a richtext document is tree, which may or may not be well-formed. Think about someone trying to bold semi-half of_a sentence_, and how MS Frontpage was made b

Not quite. Nothing to do directly with python. This was the introduction of 4 and 8 bit quantization to a large number of people. There wasn’t a python library like that anyone was used to using. Would have always been a C extension anyway.

Yes. AI research has caused some overreactions. Wall of shame? What? Why are we being so petty about a very interesting technology, and criticizing people for trying to understand it? What crime did these people commit?

Alumnus. We had multiple times when one of Nolan’s friends came to class and pretty much literally dumped a bunch of Atari hardware on the front table. We got to play with stuff and hear some great stories. The U of Utah is a great place, i

I fear you might be right. But somehow, HN is a counter-example? I rarely even see a bad joke, because we’re a self-selected sample of people who care about the edges of professional computing. So I say, why not?

Haha, I’d say just wait another day. But what is the value of reddit anymore? I have one of the oldest accounts, and I loved it. Last time I logged in (not a joke) it told me I had a new free avatar that was a girl? That I’m stuck with? And

Killer site (not a “read”) about the thing that created the term killer app. This meant, you bought the hardware because you wanted the software. At the risk of being a hypeman, I think you should take a look. Just for funsies (though I’d g

I wish everyone in tech had your perspective. That is what I see, as well. There is a lull right now between gpt4 and gpt5 (literally and metaphorically). Consumer models are plateauing around 40B for a barely-reasonable RTX 3090 (ggml made

Possibly silly to nit-pick, but there were both. Maybe I had to click somewhere, but I certainly both watched and read the NewsNation piece.
