For an always-on device you would actually fare better with an SSD than a 2.5" laptop hard drive. Laptop hard drives are not meant to be always-on. The bearings tend to wear out very fast unless they spend a fair amount of time spun-down. 3

I believe Microsoft charges OEMs $15 for XP and $50 for whichever edition of 7 which goes on netbooks. Though it wouldn't supprise me if larger vendors had a little negotiation room. Also, security companies like Mcaffee and Symatec also pa

An alternate method I've used is building an antenna on the computer side if you can't build it on the router side. You can get wireless adapters which are in the from of a usb thumb stick. Coupled with an extension cord to connect to a PC,

There has been some pretty interesting research in to storing energy in molten salts. This is a bit different than the photovoltaic cells which I believe this map is referencing; It involves capturing heat and turning it in to electricity r

I think if you were so inclined, you could probably consider Internet Explorer the same. It's only made available to Microsoft's own Windows customers.

If you disliked HT in the Pentium 4, take another look at it today. The Pentium 4 had four dispatch ports and not too many execution units - a single thread was able to exploit that. The i7, in contrast, has 6 dispatch ports feeding 12 exec

I've done a lot of work on similar topics, building real-time messaging systems in C++. The author's findings are not unique and are very common to any producer-consumer messaging system. Essentially the issue is that you want your L2 to st

Thanks for the tip. I asked a rep at the AT&T store about this and was told by them it wasn't possible. Would be nice if they knew their stuff.

Works for me in Firefox 3.59 on OpenSuse 11.2. OpenSuse for some reason also seems to have more compatibility with my workplace's web-based internal tools than other coworkers running Ubuntu or Fedora.

With the exception of takeoff and landing, electronic devices are generally permitted in flight. The radio can't be switched on, but many smart phones including the iPhone have an "Airplane Mode" which turns the radios off.

Nvidia introduced a standard called MXM a while back for notebook graphics cards. However, hardly anyone actually uses it. As you said, space/power/thermal issues still exist, and notebook manufacturers would rather have a custom board whic

One thing that's actually extremely common, however, in C code is using ints for bitmasks. I'm not sure how operators like &|! would be implemented with doubles, but they'd need some fancy software implementation.

One thing the author of this post is doing here is calling gettimeofday() in every iteration through the loops. That's an awful way to benchmark something. gettimeofday() issues a serializing instruction, which can potentially flush the ent

The balloon driver, as others have pointed out, is used in an overcommit scenario as a way for the hypervisor to reclaim memory from a guest OS. There's a balloon driver loaded in to the guest which can communicate with the hypervisor. When

I've heard stories of employers who have told employees shut down your side project or you're fired. I don't mean to be pessimistic, just make sure your project is non-competing and in line with their standards of ethics and values.

If memory serves correctly, I believe the typical calling convention for x86 is returning ints in %eax. So the caller will interpret whatever happens to be in %eax at the time as the return value.
