The independence can only ever be relative. No one is truly independent. As a self-sufficient farmer, you depend on weather. As a millionaire, you depend on the continuing functioning of the financial system.

They are direct “competitors”. I find Zotero more power-user-friendly. For instance, there is a powerful bibtex plugin for Zotero that can run a server on localhost, so I can fetch the up-to-date bibliography for any particular collection f

But why would a news website per se need to collect or process user's personal data? If you don't, you don't have to care about GDPR at all.

Why would a news magazine website do this? Is it their ads that violate GDPR?

I may be wrong, but that’s exactly what GDPR tries to achieve.

I can somewhat see where you're going with this, but I cannot possibly see how it is a reaction to my comment.

I’ll just copy-paste a comment (not mine) from a different subthread: “This all-or-nothing approach to morality is stupid. Just because not every decision in your life may be 100% morally justifiable, that does not mean “throw all ethics ov

That wasn't my point. My point was that all those requests are feature requests, as opposed to lifting some artificial restrictions. Because iOS is not open source, they would need to be coded by Apple, so it's a perfectly valid b

Didn't know about that! But it seems they were able to break the system only while the Germans where sending the settings of the plugboard in the header of each message. Once that was changed in the early 1940, their decrypting techniq

Enigma wasn't hard through obscurity. The Allies had the Enigma machine long before they were able to crack it. It was hard because with the equipment of the day, it was pretty much unbreakable in the same way that prime-number based c

Anecdotal evidence: That is the case in my circle of friends. My news feed has been empty for quite some time, but we still use the messenger and facebook itself to organize our own private events.

Certainly true. I'd just point out that exactly these kinds of mistakes happen to people too.

I don't really see why those two should be compared? Pandas is a Python library for programmatic work with tabular data. Visidata gives you a live view of a file storing tabular data.

Ok, that's financial liability. What about criminal liability? What if the car breaks rules and kills someone. Will the programmers be responsible? The CEO? Can companies be criminally convicted in the US? Or will it be on par with oth

In the same way that there is no formal theory for the exact shapes of proteins? I think it’s possible. But as with proteins, there are probably some general aspects of the problem that can be explained in simpler terms.

In this regard, it is similar to how natural sciences are done. The hyperparameter space of possible experiments is immense, they are expensive, so one has to go with intuition and luck. Reporting this is difficult. [edit:] In this analogy,

Macbook Pro, 13-inch, 2015, Intel graphics 6100. So I guess not. The 4K display is connected via displayport, and runs downscaled at 2560x1440.

I guess it's not really that surprising, but recording a 4K display eats about one and a half core on Core i5, 2.7 GHz.
