Is the US really much better? As we saw earlier in the week from Netflix, slower average bandwidth than Canada... hardly any competition and so on. If you want decent internet connectivity, move to Europe or Japan or something. They're roll

The problem for me arises when you start taxing 'the rich' more heavily than others. And having a tax rate above 50% for anyone is morally indefensible IMHO.

Maybe the 'system' collapsing is a good thing. It's a modern invention.

> " I'm arguing that if you want to be wealthy one day or are already, it's in your best interest to contribute more." The rich already contribute more. Where's the line? 90% tax rate? 99.9999%?

I know it's how it was sold, but I disagree with it. We should have let the bad companies fail and the good ones succeed.

I don't think that's true at all. Several banks did fantastically, announced record profits etc. The industry as a whole didn't fail, some particular institutions did.

Why? Are you saying it's easy to make money if you're just providing financial services? :/

Taxing the rich (even more than they are already which IMHO is a lot ) is just punishing success and rewarding failure.

I'm pretty sure more money can actually make things worse not better.

Aren't there enough videos of everything you could ever want on youtube already? Also how does putting videos on pages help with ranking? Does google process video content? :/

True, although you can probably find all subdomains for the target, or if you're lucky find someone who has setup a DNS wildcard then you'll be able to have a bit more fun and run lots of the requests concurrently. Maybe my 'few hundred a s

You can get people to participate in DDoS attacks with a malicious website though. Just use some JS to create image elements, script tags, iframes etc all with sources pointing at the target, should be able to do a few hundred a second at l

There's no point moaning "Google promised us X" if you can't back that up.

That's just because in 2000, they were trying to get as much market share as possible. Also they probably didn't need to get more revenue at the time. It sounds like you're trying to argue that Google has abandoned their core beliefs, or be

Yes. The CTR and revenue for image ads is way above text ads. This is a good move. By "PR loss" I assume you mean "geeks moan for an hour or 2 on hacker news" ;)

Fair enough. In terms of a business decision though, this will result in increased revenue, and 99.99999% of users won't care. So good on them.

Can you cite a reference there? I never heard GMail being touted as "Like the competition, but no display ads". I was a fairly early user, and never heard it talked of like that. Infact I remember the opposite - they got quite a lot of flac

Yeah damn them for giving the world an awesome free email service and then having the audacity to try and make some revenue from advertising. They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Scratch that, they should be done for fraud. I wa

There's plenty of affordable housing a stones throw away from London on the train if you're prepared to commute. I did it for a couple of years (1 hour each way).

That seems like the exception in the US though. In the UK using cheques for anything is the rare exception. The plan is to phase them out within a few years, but already hardly anyone uses them any more.

Do you not have automated bill payments? Everything in the UK is paid automatically electronically from bank account to bank account. It's kinda cool.

In the UK, we have a "direct debit guarantee". Basically if anyone ever takes too much in error, you just call up your bank and tell them to put it back, and they do.

Do you send it through the post or drive to a office or something? I just can't see how there could possibly be a less efficient way to pay bills. I'd simply go insane if I had to remember to pay bills.

Offtopic, but why the hell are people still using cash/check to pay bills in this day and age? What country are you in? Do they not have modern banking?

As I said elsewhere, Java doesn't force anyone to use factory everywhere, singleton, abstraction needless crap. So "Java the language" to me is a useful tool. It's in no way connected to "Java the culture" or "Enterprise Java" which are bot

The programmers I'm ever likely to work with, are good enough that they can read code properly, regardless of if it fits into a particular 'culture' or not.
