You're perpetuating a myth. Verbosity doesn't equal less productivity. I would be really surprised if anyone here said their bottleneck in programming was the speed they can type. Also, all languages have their needless verbosity - look a

The Mibbit backend is Java. It gives us massive advantages over any competition. The JVM is extremely fast and optimized. We handle many thousands of requests a second on a few VPSes.

How many customers do they have though. If they're 'licensing' the firehose to Google and MS, that's pretty unreliable income.

Not really, the lights on large roundabouts are pretty dynamic. You have lights to stop people going further round the roundabout, coupled with lights to stop people coming on to the roundabout. But traffic flow is pretty continuous. When s

A large number of larger roundabouts in the UK have traffic lights at the entrances and exits. What do you find idiotic about it? Works extremely well to keep traffic flowing.

Here's one of my local roundabouts: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&#... (It's a large roundabout with 5 small roundabouts around it. Such that you can go round the large roundabout in either direction). Great n

javascript doesn't have an integer type. Possibly it makes things easier for some algorithms, but as I said, it is optional. It's not rocket science to rewrite any algorithm that relies on recursion to not need it.

Huh? There's a lot of difference in the unoptimized form of recursion - namely stack usage. Yes you can hack together tail call recursion to try and make recursion perform as well as iteration does, but what really is the point?

Loops are how most people think. They're also how most CPUs think. It seems to me logical for both parties to express programs mostly using loops.

Why is it an issue though? Recursion is an optional thing some programmers like using. It's not necessary. edit: rather than downmod me to -1 for stating a fact, why not reply?

Yeah ok, it's sort of interesting as a curiosity. But it's going to be terribly inefficient if used, and doesn't really have any practical application. I've always been more of a practical "why not just use a loop" kinda guy, so it's probab

Right. Which is my point (Thanks for the downmods guys). Most people are going to want to go to a website, and have it work. A native app doesn't cut it.

afaik it's pretty academic. The only practical application is to allow recursion in languages that don't do recursion which is pretty much none. This is a good description if you're into that sort of thing: http://mvanier.livejournal.com/2

I'm not. The fact is, here at any rate (UK), Android is really making massive inroads. The lines are blurring a lot though. Blackberry is suddenly a viable option for teens. I wouldn't be surprised if Android phones were outselling iPhone b

Ported as in "You go to facebook and it just works"? Or ported as in "You have to do X,Y,Z"? If it's the later, I don't think it particularly matters. Most people just want it to work. They consider a browser should function as a browser.

I switched from iPhone to android in May. One of the reasons was just that it's open. If I want to do something on it, I probably can. Without voiding the warranty etc. It's up to me if I want to run flash. Also there's no idiotic tie in to

If someone is trying to incite real violence, they're unlikely to do it on Twitter. Holding people to account for things they tweet is insane. Twitter isn't a credible communications mechanism IMHO. It's for people to shout random things. Y

> "All other providers do require a BT line" Untrue. Most exchanges now have LLU which allows you to get your phone+ADSL from other providers. You may still need to get your phone line from BT, but that's not the case in many places.

The vast majority can get ADSL now. I believe coverage is 95%+ Obviously it sucks for the few exchanges that can't do ADSL. Then your only real options are 3G, satellite, or install your own dedicated line.
