Just so it's clear what I'm trying to say: when you're trying to decide whether to do x or to do y, you should always chose the one that maximizes the odds your company will succeed (whether that means exiting or becoming profitable...) So

As much as it's fun to think about how much you personally stand to gain in an exit, it's all just pie in the sky silliness. Your number one goal should be to maximize your odds of success without constraining yourself to any arbitrary para

Yeah we've been freaking out about this. We have our app used in the classroom, and have had several sessions disrupted because of this. Needless to say our customers were pissed. We're in the process of doing an emergency move over to EC2

Of course it goes without saying that the specific number is very location dependent - so 500k in the valley won't take you very far, but elsewhere it can last you for years. That being said, it seems a good target to shoot for is to always

Another issue we're running into now (as a result of having a growing number of users) is that we're noticing that downtime on the App Engine is shockingly bad, and getting worse. Over the last few weeks, we've seen periods of downtime pret

Well, maybe you're right, but I'll say the following: 1. Unless I'm missing something here the entity group thing is a red herring. Only if the authors of the paper explicitly setup all entities in the datastore as having the same root enti

This is totally unimpressive. You could totally do this with canvas and HTML5. In just 4-5 short years WebGL will be implemented in all browsers, so flash is totally useless here. And it uses like 50% of my CPU, which is stupid. Flash is st

I was excited for a second. This thing is extremely limited, and wouldn't get adopted by an institution for about 74 distinct reasons (e.g. data is stored in the cloud, which is illegal...) Blackboard is a terrible terrible service, and a

Personally I find Godel incompleteness to be a far more disturbing discovery than any of the things listed in the article. Something about a fundamental limitation on deductive systems just scares the hell out of me.

We use it too. That's why I can make that statement. A DB request takes over 100ms on the datastore. That's insane and unusable for about 90% of applications. Even their implementation of memcached is several orders of magnitude slower th
