Are you at a disadvantage by not being in co-op? Yes, definitely. Get in co-op. Seriously, it's really hard to overstate how valuable this is. However, a lot of companies that post jobs at UW also post them online. RIM for example hires hun

I can see how that may have come off as cynical. Let me clarify. We are based in Waterloo, Ontario. We will be hiring an intern from the University of Waterloo. Waterloo has an all co-op engineering program (at the cost of having no time of

Thanks for the IBM link! What an awesome life Jeff has. Became oscenely rich through Palm and Handspring, and how he runs his own neuroscience institute. Seriously, in my mind I can't imagine anything better than that.

Here's a better link: http://www.onintelligence.org/ Jeff's book is at the top of my list of things to read (it's been sitting on my self for a few weeks now.) What I've read about it so far sounds damn interesting though.

That's one weakness of Objectivism which has become more apparent to me in the last few years. The philosophy seems to almost construct a platonic form of "rationality" and "self-interest" and never really reconnect with concretes, staying

Nah, I use C++ features pretty heavily. I'll even admit that I use Boost. I use STL when possible, because it's usually more efficient than hand coding and saves some time on implementing common algorithms. C++ gives you the ability to put

Sounds cool. I'll definitely look into it. Thanks! I actually haven't looked at Lisp at all, but Paul's enthusiasm about it is pretty contagious, so it's next on my list of skills-to-learn.

Alright I admit it, I'm one of these crazy people. I've been programming in C/C++ since junior high. It was the second language I learned (the first being Pascal.) I guess because of that I never really saw it as "difficult." Everything is

I like how you call Rand's work bullshit but don't provide a single example. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if you haven't read any of her work. Most of her critics haven't. Also, it's interesting that you don't try to reconcile the fact t

This is changing very quickly these days. Rand is mentioned in most courses on contemporary philosophy. Her ethics is usually called "enlightened self-interest" or "rational egoism." There are now quite a number of Ayn Rand philosophy chair

Two points: 1. I'm actually very surprised at how many Ayn Rand fans there are on this site. For a fringe philosophy that has fewer followers than Scientology there seems to be an unusually high concentration here. I am a big Ayn Rand fan,
