Really? The menu bar at the top is basically the same, albeit squishier than before. They added a dock, and a ton of chrome. I'm not seeing how anything was "a step back" by any means. The only irk I really have is lack of keyboard navigati

I found my wife on a local dial-up Bulletin Board System and she's a fully certified geek. She does WOW raids two nights per week, she digs Fringe, sci-fi and fantasy fiction. She dual boots Ubuntu and Windows 7, and when I was stranded wit

And here it is. I have a specific account for only my GVoice. It would, rest assured, be tied to that one. Not much else happens on that account.

I love Google. I use Google. And I would have said the exact same thing two years ago. At least Schmidt came out and eventually said what pretty much every company that has shareholders stands for. Ergo, this is not a tired reference to any

I agree we need easier-to-use documentation on this stuff, but have you considered documenting what you've done yourself? I started keeping a notebook of helpful tricks back in the 90s. By the mid-90s I was publishing some of the info, and

If it's not a groundbreaking idea that can be monetized, particularly one that's both helpful yet easy for others to replicate as you say... I'd be tempted to open-source it if it were my baby, but the call is yours alone. You can always at

I do infosec in the financial industry, mostly UNIX, but a little mainframe and windows stuff as well when needed. I believe you can find my email address in my profile. Feel free to contact me.

++ on "expert" But seriously, it seems "hacker" is thrown in self-reference too much. While anyone can do something clever to perform "a hack," to actually be a "hacker" takes a mind-set, not an accomplishment. People can become hackers by

I usually just tell normal people that I work with computers or that I keep bad guys out of bank accounts. It's a word that one can use in self-reference, but only once you've been accepted by other hackers as being one. It doesn't apply on

I wholeheartedly agree with the first part of this statement. I've been called a "hacker" plenty of times, and once that happens, I say it's fair to call yourself one, but not before. No one would have ever called me a software developer. T

Like many here, I remember when people would eke out all sorts of crazy demos from relatively anemic hardware. I still love the demo scene. All of it, really. From the die-hard retro-grouches with their 68ks and z80s that scoff at all thing

While it's vague, I think the spirit of the "challenge" is that once a command has been used, you should not use it again. Although one can make a cat() function in bourne-esque shells such as bash quite easily: cat() { while IFS="" read l

That "faux-to" at the bottom is a HORRIBLE photoshop perspective hack. It's obviously a 2D image that's been skewed and hacked to look 3D with the buttons moved to look like they overlap. I call shenanigans.
