Is this really the attitude you want to see in the community around you? There are pages full of other potentially interesting things just on this one site. Go find one that's interesting to you and be constructive.

Pardoning him explicitly seems ridiculous. Either pardon everyone as a statement that you find the law abhorrent or don't pardon anyone and allow the shame to guide further decisions. Pardoning the popular examples just hides what you

I would guess it's mobile/tablets. I rarely see tasteful advertising geared towards that space, and "regular" pages shown on a mobile phone force me to zoom in on content and scroll past ads.

I don't know that you can pin this solely on universities. Simple supply and demand states that they'll keep raising rates until the market stops following them. Each group has a hand in this mess, including the students themselve

No, mostly because it's inconvenient. Making the root filesystem read only means having to track down everything that tries to write to it and fix mounts for them. After a few years of working with this, I kind of wish we'd bitten

We've been doing this for ages where I work. New EC2 AMIs are built inside a disk image. We can pretty easily use all of the standard tools through chroot, so installing packages is relatively simple and flexible. Instances are ready f

You can't. You can use type inspection and assertions to clearly delimit borders in your code, but it's really not the same thing.

Is there something in Rails 4 that you desperately need? If not, wait. This looks like it will be a smother release than 2.x to 3.x was, but I wouldn't add this variable to the whole process this late in the game. In the meantime you c

As a developer that primarily works on ruby, I can see it if he wanted 1.9.3. Most of the references you'll find on that tell you to use @environment_wrapper_of_the_month, and those are deep rabbit holes for people who know nothing abo

It can be, yes, but it's easier to do so in Haskell. Some of the compiler extensions allow you to push truly crazy invariants through type checking. Also, for most dynamic languages, checking the type at runtime goes against the grain of th

Yes, it's more complicated, but it doesn't really have much in the way of demands on the language used for implementation. It may royally suck to do, but you can write a compiler with nothing more than logic, data structures, and file I/O.

Considering people are writing web servers and all sorts of other things in it, I'm sure it's suitable for writing a compiler. Technically all you really need is logic, some data structures, and low level file I/O. If you're going to spit o
