I used to read a website that interviewed people (often successful people) and asked them about their setup. They'd explain all the apps and gadgets they used. I forget what the site was called. Are there any updated sites like that? I

I don't know if it's related to Jellyfin becoming a more viable competitor, but Plex has improved a lot recently. Sync/Downloads are better, the TV apps got a much nicer layout. The metadata agents got updated to be faster. I

I'm with you. I wish Plex they didn't offer a lifetime plex pass, because one-time payments (instead of a monthly subscription) are likely the cause of Plex needing to do all this extra stuff no one asked for to further monetize.

I agree, but isn't that because they release so often? With RHEL releases every 4-5 years, getting the latest docker or kubernetes running would mean waiting years, or creating a frankentein RHEL with updated dependencies. Or just use

yea, if you're building a distributed system that will need to scale to handle millions of TPS, then networking, IO, filesystem etc.. improvements can be significant.

Thanks for this. I didn't realize why, but it's always annoyed me how little info is on Amazon's order confirmation emails, forcing you to click the link. This is why!

That's probably very accurate. It's something Red Hat didn't consider, but there's value in a developer using the same OS they're using on their production servers. Very few use Fedora on servers, and very few use R

I think it's a little more nuanced than that. If I'm building something new, I generally want a new kernel/OS underneath. Especially if what I'm building can take advantage of it (improvements to filesystems, networking

I'm not an Ubuntu user (CentOS 7 on my server, will probably move to Rocky 9 when that releases), but it's easy to see why Ubuntu has been successful. RHEL has 10y support, but historically has released their OS every 4-5 years, w

yep. It serves to justify the subscription though, which is what all businesses want. Ongoing money vs a one-time purchase. I personally quite like the idea of an appliance for email. But adding a permanent subscription that not only costs

I've never really understood the value of price-matching. Unless you have a gift card, or one store offers free shipping, why both with a price match? Just buy from the cheaper place.

I've used Arch for 12 years. But every time I reinstall, it takes me a long, long time to get everything working perfectly. It's painful, and requires a second machine to have the documentation handy. The documentation is good in

I always figured Microsoft partnered with Ubuntu because their saw Red Hat as their real competitor. Kind of like how Walmart uses Azure instead of AWS.

Valve doesn't try to prevent it. But if it's soldered, it won't be easy.

Agreed. I've used Arch for about 12 years. My system has been unbootable after an update maybe 3 times. That's not bad really, and that's just applying updates daily. Any additional rigour should improve this a lot.

Bingo, the kernel updates through the life of the fedora release. Then it stops. The life of a console is 8+ years. This needs to be supported for that long. Valve don't want to do multiple dist-upgrades over that time. They just want

I'm a little disappointed that Valve is focused on Proton only. This can also play native Linux games. A well written native game should perform better, and, more importantly, get better battery life. Maybe Valve is going about this th

I don't think either of those points are correct. 1. Fedora is not a rolling release, so you don't get every single kernel point release like you do in Arch. 2. Steam does not want to do a full Fedora 30 to 31 upgrade every six mo

I couldn't disagree more. Of course T-mobile's free roaming isn't going to be super fast. You can pay extra 4G/5G. But if you're hopping across countries, it's great. It's obviously not made for instagram&

How good is Notion? Is the lock-in worth it? I'm fearful of lock-in, and just use markdown plain text, sync'd with dropbox, and then use different markdown apps on different OSes.

I love my 2015 Shield. I do with that Nvidia would release a new Shield with a better SoC though. Even the 2019 model has essentially the same chip. The chip is still fine for all streaming, I'd just like more horsepower for emulation.
