Until it doesn't. It isn't the case that even if everyone agrees on the BLM, Trans rights, and the outcome of WWII will agree on future issues of the day. Thier stance sets up an expectation that the language should have an offici

Interesting language. Great web page. I find it off-putting to have politics as the third thing on the home page though. Makes me think there is going to be a scissor that cuts the community apart at some point. ("As a Gleam community

I wish he spent a bit more time on the section regarding magnitude of the effect for different accelerations. If indeed there is a minimum acceleration I wonder if it might not be measurable with some atomic physics experiment (atomic clock

Exactly. I'm very surprised someone a whole essay like this and have this misconception. I was half expecting to see "humans building something smarter than human machines violates the laws of thermodynamics" next.

So every company who uses VPNs to allow their people to get into the network from offsite (customer site, airport, hotel) now can't safely? You basically have to trust everyone on the remote LAN to not act like a malicious DHCP server.

Readers please note: recording consent laws vary state to state. Do not read the headline and assume it applies to yours. Some states are single party consent, some two, some might be more subtle.

It is trivially easy for those types of actors to simply use a stolen identity or create an entirely plausible one out of thin air. Can you provide a historical example of when something like that has happened? It sounds like hyperbole to

Your point is well-taken, but see my reply below. Stopping state-backed level actors might not be possible, but we can make it harder for cyber-criminals. Has it been shown this is by a state-level actor?

I am not assigning any personal blame or making an accusation of bad judgement on the maintainer. Taking contributions from anons appears to be common. I am suggesting that should change.

I would want to think it over but off the top of my head: GitHub could provide this as a service, perhaps using uploads of whatever state/national ID the user is coming from. Give a little 'verified ID' badge. All banks do th

It would appear that no one knows the RL identity of the bad actor? Or even vouches for them? It doesn't seem wise to accept contributions to projects which may have security implications from anons. Code contributions clearly can'

Yes, this drove at least two people I know/encouraged to use it off the platform. When people see this they also think that Signal snooped their contacts. Very bad.

Researchers don’t yet know how dangerous tiny plastics are for human health. In a large review published in 2019, the World Health Organization said there wasn’t enough firm evidence linking microplastics in water to human health, but desc

That's fine safety guidance but on the facts this is not correct. For single and multimode fibers if it has a smaller focal spot some distance the fiber than at its tip you are talking about an assembly that includes the fiber plus an

I don't think this is a fair criticism. 1) The step where you evaluate "how they perform" is necessarily subjective. 2) you could design a study and recruit participants but that isn't something a blogger is going to do.

OK. In the case at hand we are dealing with a mathematical function. In->Out is all there is. Back-estimating a mathematical function by sampling is as close to reverse engineering as anything is.

The terms against using the output to develop a competing product seem the same as reverse engineering to me. Competitors can't get OpenAI's model weights but use its outputs to produce a functionally similar model. It's like
