For me LyX hits a sweetspot: it does 95% of what I need to do in Latex without ever having to type a backslash (or having to lookup whatever amsmath command is used for setting a matrix). But when I do need to drop down to latex to do somet

In the past I've used Inkscape to hand-massage some mpl plots exported to svg before including them in a document. Works well enough if needed.

Here are two credible reviews / meta-analyses stating the contrary, that is, that bicycle helmet use or legislation does, statistically, reduce head injuries. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii&#

Jim Tcl sounds really awesome. I use tcl quite a bit as the embedded scripting language in a CAE app. Things like OO with garbage collection and closures/functional primitives are probably what I miss the most from Tcl.

It sort of reminds of mechanical engineering, where engineers sketch out the problem solution, do the calculations, and make sure the solution works. Then, they supervise drafters or technologists to produce the actual final product of engi

FWIW I had an epson printer that refused to print B&W documents until I replaced the cyan cartridge. Fixed the problem temporarily by getting cheap chinese cartridge off ebay, but Epson is now very much on my boycott list.

Knowingly buying stolen goods is also a crime. And if you're buying a CF racer for a 20, you sure know it's stolen.

I don't know if you were downvoted because of the cynical tone, but that sounds pretty accurate in my experience. It's why I quit after a master's.

Or any job at all. It's going to be tough finding a good post doc position if you didn't publish during your phd. Hell, in Canada you have to do a master's before applying for a PhD, and you won't be getting the good sch

Some journals allow you to post the manuscript copy (not edited or typeset by the journal) on your personal page. Some give you no rifts at all.

Playing devils advocate here: Reviewers themselves aren't paid, but the publishers do pay editors to do preliminary filtering, select reviewers, collect their comments and decide what to do with them. Now that is relatively little work

I can assure you that most "traditional" engineering (thinking mostly mechanical and civil) calculations, for things you use daily, were done in excel. Anything that would be a pit too much of pain to manually bang out on a calcul

FDM parts are actually porous and won't hold pressure at all. In my limited experience SLA can be made to work.

I enjoyed reading this post, as well as I did patio11's a few years ago, but I feel that a lot of the advice applies mostly to highly in-demand workers (read: software people). At least, so has been my limited experience.

FWIW, my (half of) rent (split with SO) in Montreal is less than 15% of my net income. And I'm not even in software. People see the low engineer salaries around here and are generally reluctant to come, but I find the quality of life t

Since the elastic modulus (slope/derivative of deformation vs stress graph) the energy absorbed is not necessarily very high even though you can get high deformations (multiple 100%, compared to 30% or so for soft steels).
