JSON is really unfriendly for human editing. Notably, lack of comments, and trailing commas being strictly forbidden. JSON5 seems like a decent alternative to either.

Engineering (as in PEng in the US, but my jurisdiction just calls it Engineer) also implies liability, and a risk of losing your license if you fuck up.

My parents live 75 km away from Montreal. It's a small, somewhat isolated town, but still: it's not remote in any sense of the word. Their only broadband option is LTE (and data prices in Canada are through the roof) or satellite

I heard about 20k per seat for CATIA at a previous employer. 35k wouldn't surprise me if you start adding add-ons (simulation, PDM, etc).

The only OOP-ish thing I've really missed in nim is interfaces. It seems to be a really convenient way to re-use code: "this function (proc) can operate on any type that has implementations of this and that other function (proc)&q

Also the case in Canada, to my knowledge. A few years ago, a TV show called the tax agency anonymously, claiming to be drug dealers and asking how to report their earnings. The tax agency person was helpful and cooperative, and said they ca

Are you implying this only happens in Canada? If so, why is that you think? Genuinely curious, if the US has managed to implement effective anti-tax avoidance solutions, could they be implemented here?

I assume GP is aware of that, and from what I understand, he is pointing out that OpenWRT also happens to run great on various x86 hardware/SBCs sold as "pfsense boxes".

I've certainly had some "None" errors in Python. I think the difference comes from dynamic vs static typing. In Python, you sort of get into the habit of "defensive" programming: checking inputs to your function, ca

Definitely this. So many people here recommending linux, WSL, a macbook, etc, for absolutely no reason. There is no reason any plain old windows would not work for python. I learned about back around 2005, on windows, using the good ol'

Kids also don't have much money to buy games, and have lots of free time to figure out how to pirate them. Maybe some of them can convince their parents to buy it for them. For me Buying a 60-80$ AAA game (I was a teen in the early 0

The problem with high-power is that you have to go high voltage, which is high risk for a hobbyist. I couldn't find any info on the motor in the article, but most existing EV conversion kits operate around 120 - 140 V. 110 HP is 82 kW,

EV West is what I thought of when I read the headline. I bought one of these kits a year ago (for work): https://www.go-ev.com/motors-warp.html#HyPer_9_IS About the same power as the article. It's a newer kit, but NetG

Does it need to be a web app? VB isn't web (afaik). You could probably do it all in python using sqlite, matplotlib and tkinter. MPL provides tk widgets for displaying its graphs. For drag and drop GUI dev, maybe this? http:/
