That's kind of the way mathematics expands its knowledge base. Not always, of course. But it's a fine approach. It's an application of the KISS principle.

I've done similar. Last couple of years I've been using Redmine for issue tracking. (Hint: Run under JRuby with glassfish gem and don't use sqlite.) IM has generally worked better than email, prefering to keep useful chunky data in redmine

Then, on the face of it, you have poor quality workers, or folk that are the wrong type to work remotely. For cross-checking, CI (with code coverage), tdd, and pairing helps a lot, I find. And they're cheap to do.

Working remotely is different to working together in an office, of course. It requires different skills and a different type of motivation, ime. It also requires far better communication skills. Weak communication skills can kill productivi

How often do you all sit in the same room? How often to you pair, or simply work together physically? First thing that struck me was the size of the team. Eight techs is a big team, especially for a start-up. I'm generalizing, obviously, as

Can you clarify the question a bit more, please. For me, at least, learning a language and solving a problem with it are two different things. For example, I can solve problems in quite a few languages that I would never claim to know. Many

That's one reason why a business must have a competent CIO on the management team. Sometimes you can let the apparent changes ride, since they are politicing between other senior members of the team; sometimes you can simply say, "No"; and

Perception is everything. That's people's reality. We can rationalize until the cows come home, but that won't change anyone's perception. For that, you must convince them, individually. The problem is not, I believe, Facebook's inability t

This is an excellent and simple anecdote of someone discovering why TDD (and its siblings) is a fundamental core skill in software development. What I really like here is that the author has provided a simple numerical explanation for the c

You sound like someone who most folk would welcome on board. Don't worry about limited experience so early, I know that's easy to say, but it really won't matter in the near future when you have moved on. Remember that to recruiters you are

On my laptops, I've used Ubuntu since Badger (2005). I went to Ubuntu from Debian, because everything on the laptop suddenly worked. No more kernel compiles or weirdy-beardy deep hackery. Linux on the desktop has arrived, I thought. But I'l

This isn't actually using the Reability plug-in, though, when it's installed. So, it doesn't pick up users' Readability settings, which are very important in many cases. Thus, one has to apply Readability to the Fancyboxed page in any case.
