I think many of you in the Hacker News crowd will recognize this problem that I'm yet to find a solution to myself: mkdir [blinking cursor] Then 30 minutes passes and you didn't end up making that thing anyway since you got distrac

I usually argue that version control history is often as useful as code comments. In this case, though, I suppose comments would have been better than some arcane 15 year old VCS :)

Thanks! Was not aware of the networking part, nice to know. The rendering engine is also much more than "just rendering". When I click two small links close to each other on Android Chrome, a small clickable popup containing a zoomed in por

Just for your information, we don't have a "real" Chrome on iOS, we have UIWebViews with Chrome branding. So Google can only innovate in the UI surrounding the web pages, not the rendering and interaction of the websites themselves.

There's usually a large amount of comments and metadata relating to code that isn't present in the source files themselves, but in an external database: git blame path/to/file.txt I think this is one of the most underused tools in

I recommend reading this reddit comment for a great explanation of why "faster than light" doesn't make any sense: http://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/fjwkh/why_exactl... Essentially, it makes no sense because "faster than light"

For music, I use sshfs to mount a folder from my own server at home, and mocp, a console based music player. Works great, and when I'm home, all the traffic is on my LAN, which is a plus. Would like to replace mocp, but it's the only linux

Here's what I see when I visit that page: http://imgur.com/bwf5N (Tl;dr: a blurb of text saying it's not available for Linux, that's it, no info about what it is etc.) Non-Linux peeps: do you get an equally uninformative landing page?

The mix of plain desktop and touch environment is what draws me to Win8. I didn't get a Asus Transformer, as the only emacs I could get there was in a terminal, and in a sandbox. With a Win8 tablet, I get tablet-y stuff, and a full desktop

The article is not conclusive on whether it was TDD or just plain automated testing that provided the benefits. I've heard good arguments against TDD, but I haven't heard any good arguments against automated testing. (Other than situations

Another thing I really miss for single page web apps (mobile or not) is iOS style memory warings. It's an event that is emitted when you reach memory limits, and in it you should clear out everything that the user doesn't currently see (rea

If Valve discovers that you can get more performance in general out of a Linux rig, my guess is that it won't take long before the entire hardcore gaming community runs Linux. That community community is crazy about performance. In Valve's

Great summary! I'd also add a sentence about transactions being first class. Everything is wrapped in transactions, you can add metadata to transactions (who did it, when did it happen), and since no data is lost, you can use transactions I

This talk by Rich Hickey is what got me into Datomic. http://www.infoq.com/presentations/The-Design-of-Datomic I would probably have used it for the system I'm making now, as it's a very good match to our requirements, but 0.1 is 0.1, and

That's great! I'm trying this now. Hopefully Google isn't too clever here, though... I know that of the people I e-mailed use Google Apps, so perhaps Google detects that it's an Google Apps address and enforces Google+ account creation.

That's interesting. I like Google+, but none of my friends use it. Inviting them to events would be one way of getting them started. Would be even better if I could invite people without Google accounts by e-mail, to make it generally usabl

If you're like me and have no idea what Servo is, this seems to be a good summary. http://www.2ality.com/2012/02/servo.html Tl;dr: A brand new browser, implemented with a language called Rust, aims to be small and good at utilizing CPU co

Seems like the tl;dr is: 50+ x86 cores with RAM and CPU soldered to PCIe boards. In other words, a mix of CPU and GPU. A standard architecture, as opposed to GPU private architectures, many cores, and faster memory pipelines. Now, where did

I wonder if there are JS minifiers that creates a symbol file so that I can expand stack traces with it, much like compilers do.
