udev related? I'm having an udev issue on my Thinkpad T420s where udev doesn't detect the trackpoint if the touchpad is enabled in BIOS. The people that work on udev must have very little hair on their heads, I can only begin to imagine the

HDMI => DVI => VGA should work, no? A lot of adapters, but at least you'll get a signal out of it.

For me, free software is about practical concerns, not activism: I don't want to depend on one company or entity, especially if I don't pay them. But even if I do pay them, I'll have troubles in using their binary blob if they go bankrupt.

Hard is OK. Over time, you become better at it, until it's no longer a problem -- it's a relative thing. Not saying easy is bad, but hard isn't _that_ big of a problem. Example: I find Russian very hard to speak. That doesn't mean Russian I

One workaround for submodules would be local DNS entries, i.e. edit /etc/hosts to make github.com the temporary local github.com. Also, I generally mirror submodule repos and use those. But neither of these "solutions" fixes the actual issu

I guess it's just about familiarity. We do have the tools (mdns/avahi/bonjour, tcp/netcat, ...). But the internet is usually up, so we don't need to learn how to set up our own local servers, and there's no punishment for transmitting a fil

Akin's law #2: To design a spacecraft right takes an infinite amount of effort. This is why it's a good idea to design them to operate when some things are wrong. I think there's some truth to that :) Source: http://spacecraft.ssl.umd.edu/

I agree wholeheartedly. I always facepalm when people aren't able to work because the internet is down (read: no github access). Just start an SSH server, netcat some keys around (or use an USB stick), and get back to work again :) Transmit

Apple uses client certificates for their APNS API (push notifications). Both to verify that you can actually send push, and to identify which app and environment (dev or production) you're sending push for. I have also used client certifica

The certificate is public anyway, you'd need the private key as well in order to authenticate.

Your setup sounds like something I could want for myself. I have a truecrypt "virtual disk" that I would like to unmount on suspend and mount on resume. Can you elaborate on the details of your encryption setup?

As pointed out in other Gatekeeper threads, it would be nice if users could choose which signing authorities to trust. Signing is a good security model, but a single authority sounds risky to me. Perhaps I feel that Signing Authority Foo ha

This means that we can safely install /usr/bin/gcc without affecting Xcode's bundled gcc, and vice versa updating Xcode is guaranteed to not affect our custom /usr/bin/gcc. Sounds like a big improvement to me!

Node is concurrent. libuv spawns threads and uses unix and windows APIs to read files, and pass messages back to the main JS thread when tey're done. So while your JavaScript code only runs in one thread, threads are used under the hood, m

I want to know more about NeXT. Particularly interested in the details surrounding the fact that the goal was spring 1987, but actual release was fall 1988. Perhaps the Isaacson biography covers it? Any other literature I could refer to?

I'd just like to add that since Git supports SSH, it's pretty easy to set up git repos on any server. `cd ~; mkdir myrepo.git; cd myrepo.git; git init --bare`. Then you can just `git push username@server.com:myrepo.git`. This of course does

Bada is not a full OS, it's more like Qt. Bada does contain a kernel out of the box afaik, but the kernel is pluggable. So perhaps Samsung can use Tizen under the hood, and Bada on top.

I sure hope so. My home server has neither Xorg installed or a monitor attached. Very hard to tell what the actual product is, but I'd be surprised if they don't have a Linux daemon of some sort.
