Right. I had the same question about directly comparing the GDP figure versus the debt figure. It'll certainly help if someone knowledgeable lays bare the important factors and how they bear on the "rising debt" issue.

A dumb question - isn't the GDP a per-year figure whereas the debt a total figure? ... so doesn't it simply mean that if all GDP goes to paying off the debt, it will necessarily take more than 1 year. That pay off period is increasing and a

You can't get a reliable answer from anybody for this question. Academics might tend to say "absolutely!" while those who skipped it would say "who cares?" or something like that. They key is to figure out what directions you want to grow

Nice writeup by Abhishek, though it still falls into the "A is cool because it has features f1, f2, ..." category (despite SlyShy thinking otherwise). My own experience of lisp has been more like learning origami. The basic stuff is a squar

At Broadcast Asia 2008, I saw a football game displayed on a multi-HD resolution screen (I think 12x HD, but not sure) @60fps. I should say it took the audience to the game. You can tell individual faces in a packed pavilion. Its all moving

I was being sarcastic with my colour related remarks. The point being that a "new" dimension can feel pointless initially. Its as strange to think of 3D as a "new" dimension as it is to think of "colour" as one.

For me, "How to train your dragon" was the most enjoyable 3D experience of all the 3D films I've seen - Avatar, Alice, Clash, HTTYD. The 3D didn't get in the way, and it really enhanced certain parts to the extent that I'd miss it. I've see

I buy Apple's lines on this one. For long, I've been going "Grrrr...." over Flash heating up my macbook pro when run under MacOSX, but running much cooler (as in temperature) under windows on the exact same hardware. So much for cross-platf

There is a restaurant in Singapore called "Annalakshmi" which has been operating like this for, like a decade at least. You go there, eat, and pay what you feel like paying. The food as well as ambience is good and I think on the average pe

Yes they are the same, but the harmonic function formulation seems a bit more more appealing because it focuses on the end result as opposed to the process.

Wonder why they didn't treat hierarchical labels by attaching labels to labels. That way you can have "Family/Kids" and "CuteStuff/Kids" refer to the same "Kids", you wouldn't need to always type out the hierarchy and can just say "Kids" to

Copyright law looks like the only reference point for defining "write" - if you own copyright for something, you "wrote" it, otherwise you legally didn't (even if you claim otherwise). It might have been much simpler if Apple just said "all

Not sure if even your "mechanical translation" condition works, though certainly tighter. What if I hire a human to do the translation? If even that would violate the agreement, then the "original written language" of every program is the

I absolutely don't think I'm lying when I say "I wrote program B" (from my second argument). It hinges on what "write" means. It no longer means "put pen to paper". If that's true, then nobody "writes" software any more and all developers a

Another argument against the validity of that requirement - if I write a program A that writes another program B, can I not claim copyright for program B? If not, then an artist using Adobe Photoshop cannot claim copyright for their PDF ima

But if the compiler generates "readable code", there is no way to counter my claim that I "wrote" my program in Objective-C. If that is indeed Apple's instruction and what developers need to abide by, lets lobby the processor manufacturers

People - relax. The cross-compiler vendors will simply change their target language from machine instructions to .... Objective-C. It's probably a much easier target anyway.
