I wouldn't trust Facebook (or Google places) with my checkins. My Foursquare friends are a select group of people I know well, isolated from other network groups. Also, what happened to do one thing and do it well?

I really like the Open Street Map project. I think it's shameful of Google to create Map Maker, which essentially copies the functionality of Open Street Map, however Google don't release the user contributed data under a reusable license,

I found it was really slow when assets were in debug. I generated a new rails app and copied the config from there and then merged in the settings from the old project I needed and it was super fast.

I think it's very bad that Google have created a product to compete with OSM but under a license which doesn't allow any reuse of the user generate data. I see absolutely no point in contributing to Map Maker whilst the data isn't open.

There must be a calculable limit to the size of the event that you can see at a given distance. There are finite number of photons which are emitted from an event, these spread out with the inverse square law, so as your distance increases

Couldn't the same argument be made of any protocol? Not all browser implement HTTP in the same way, IPv6 isn't compatible with IPv4, but all agree to switch, HTML is governed by a central body but a lot of the influence comes from the commu

Just had a demo at the NICAR11 conference, it looks very impressive. Restricted to 1000 rows and 40 columns, but can export Python script to process larger files. It suggests and shows previews for changes to the data, which is helpful, esp
