There's a shocking amount of systems that still have 32 bit time_t. Linux and glibc only started supporting it on 32bit systems in the current decade.

I was summarizing this from a Google search. https://isocpp.org/wiki/faq/intrinsic-types#:~:text=One%20wa... . As I read it, this link may be describing a hypothetical rather than real compiler. But I did not parse

Depends on your definition of addressable. Lots of CISC architectures allow memory accesses in various units even if they call general-purpose-register-sized quantities "word". Iirc the C standard specifies that all memory can be

I think the pdp-10 could have 9 bit bytes, depending on decisions you made in the compiler. I notice it's hard to Google information about this though. People say lots of confusing, conflicting things. When I google pdp-10 byte size it

My guess is that somebody coded that event-loop-less X client not really familiar with the language and how to write Xlib apps. I partially assume this because C, C++ and especially Xlib are becoming less popular over time, so finding skill

If memory serves, Windows treats a sleep under the scheduler quantum length as a yield. It may take you off the cpu if there's something else to run but it may not. Meanwhile burning up cycles may prevent low power states. At any rate,

Not my experience at all. Granted I haven't tried writing a loop like this in 20ish years, because once you spot that mistake you don't tend to make it again, and CPUs are better now. Another thing to note is when you call sleep w

The code is a little weird. There is no XLib event loop. It calls sleep(100) in a loop until it hits SIGINT. That will have high cpu usage for no reason.

The syscall implementations themselves do checks and return EPERM/EACCES when appropriate. The mechanism for doing the syscall can change. I mean, in the 90s it happened via int 0x80, then we got sysenter, then the vdso. io_uring just

This is off topic, but I don't see Bush/Cheney as very different from Trump, and there is a straight line between those. The biggest contrast is that Trump jettisoned decorum and politeness. Bush was outwardly polite as he enacted
