There's lots of arguments against it. Probably the biggest one is that I do not believe that punishment is an effective deterrent most of the time. People will keep committing crimes even if the punishment is harsh. Another is that ou

I don't think GIMP is a fair comparison to any of your other examples. VLC, KDE, and LibreOffice are all more intuitive than the GIMP.

Except there are some platforms where you need to go through libc and the direct syscall interface is considered private, or subject to change. OpenBSD is like this, and I believe Mac is too.

I've followed politics for my whole life and watched tons of Biden speeches going back decades. I was seeing his old "spark" quite a bit well into 2024. The debate, he fell off a cliff, and his follow-up interviews were eve

I think California just passed the prop to escalate some crimes to felonies, so I feel like the policy commonly used to justify this joke may be dead.

The gap between his last state of the union (March 2024) and the debate (June 2024) seemed pretty big, and I'm not the only one to say that. But again, it isn't black and white. Maybe the speech format suited him better.

Inflation is a complicated topic that doesn't get adequately captured in the sound bites. I kept hearing clips of voters saying they want prices to go back down, but my understanding of the economics is that this would be terrible. Ins

I believe his faculties got substantially worse in 2024. He was a lot more present in speeches in 2021 for example. Mental decline isn't black and white, and you tend to see people as your mental model of how they used to be, so you ca

The idea that running stuff in the cloud will protect you from a criminal investigation is totally absurd.

What do you think "the cloud" is? I'm reminded of an old meme, "the cloud is just someone else's computer". They could raid a data center and seize machines. They could also subpoena data they are looking for.

I misread two names. Bill Waterson doxxing Scott Adams. Because they're both comic strip authors, I suppose. But reading TFA and seeing hypercard set me straight.

It's important to note this document was not disclosed to her defense. Law enforcement suppressing evidence that might exonerate, even in part or lead to a lesser charge, is a well worn trope, and should outrage us all. Not to mention

You seem to think a lot of things that aren't security boundaries are security boundaries. There have been VM escapes too. VMs are not for running untrusted OS images you get from end users. I'm done with this thread, have a nic

Just google the criticisms of flatpak from a security perspective. They're out there. Containerization on Linux was never intended to be a security feature for totally untrusted, malicious code. It's isolation for trusted code.

I wouldn't trust flatpak enough to run a truly untrusted executable. I am sure flatpak's isolation is full of holes unrelated to windowing. But I don't think a game purchased through steam counts as untrusted.

More like do a thing and do it once. If every WM and DE needs to do it, you have some that don't, or you have issues that are handled correctly by some DEs and not others, etc.

The criticism is that Wayland duplicates a lot of effort in multiple compositors. The compositor does work that happens in Xorg and in the WM. Whereas lots of common functionality gets implemented in Xorg that WMs and DEs don't need to

The headline and the byline are vague but the article has 19 occurrences of Hoback. I read the article and had no confusion about this. I find it disingenuous to say they want to evade accountability by omitting it from the headline.
