Surely flipping burgers is a step up from Java coding? Asking if they want fries with that is better than having to endure the shit-fest of eclipse, and the horrors of Java development

Wait till hex is filled with crap like gems are today. The Rails programmers are coming to elixir as it had already been called the new Rails, and they will follow the pragprog book to it the new promised land. If you enjoyed early adopter

So django gets it right. Laravel and symfony seem to get it right, yesod for Haskell gets it right - basically Rails is pretty awful, always was, but the crowd got caught up in five minute blogs and shiny magic to question the questionable

Come to Rio - watch the Olympians swim in the very dirty water they promised to clean but didn't! Catch zika, then fill out the police and insurance forms after you get robbed! Seriously though, Rio is a very very dangerous place to v

To be fair, given the quality of the code from most Rails developers, the gems are more like turds than hairballs.

Rails codebases do not age well, and are always unpleasant to work on. I never saw the same issue with django codebases of a similar age. Nor even ones from Perl or PHP frameworks either. No. It is a special combination of the shiny insecur

Sure now it is Rails 5 - enterprise Rails strikes back! Seriously though, I am looking forward to Rails 8 - with the ActionSecurityHolePipeline.

Ruby gems in particular host a lot of abandonware and basically little turds that entice "I read pragprog, watch screencasts, and am now leet Rails dev!" Folks into using them with the promise of easy Lego style coding. It never e

Where from Rails? Anywhere looks better - personally, our firm uses falcon on python and lightweight Go web services with native std libs, and it works very well.

Actually O'Reilly published a good book on Rails in the early days 'enterprise rails', which was a very well written book. The pragprog web books seem to be a bell weather, the shiny web crowd flowed into Rails, node and soon

If you learn a library, you will always be in the driving seat. If you learn a framework, well, better buckle up, because it is a bumpy ride. Frameworks are like hamburgers at maccy ds - consumption for the masses, no thinking required. Lat

I remember early Rails, around 0.13, pre RC, the community was small the future seemed bright. Little did we know the horrors of what it would turn into. Most of the professional people left when they saw the security circus, the endless ho

I would be glad if apple products supported any network without all the constant disconnects and link level problems. Especially shocking as the BSD underlying stack is robust, it is all the Cupertino crap on top, the "helper" dae

The bigger problem with embargoes are the cloudflares of the world, who use it as a marketing angle (as per the post). I think embargoes don't work, won't work, even if well intentioned. Just get the details out, let people take t

I think a thread being godwin'd on reddit, is like any programming thread on HN getting dragged down into "but, you should use Rust." Annoying, very annoying, and a hard problem to solve.

Errm, how will you open your mind, if you are able to discuss with others, to read challenging ideas, to take on-board another point of view, when you are hermetically sealed in a "safe space"? Surely they are unsafe spaces, as th

The 'Magick' in this case is less welcome when your system is pwned. Maybe less magic formats and tools will have, I don't know, less vectors for compromise. We had better options before and after C, yet here we are. Not to p
