I think it's like most home devices, it comes down to ownership. We've gotten into the habit of streaming everything from someone else e.g we're in cloud rental economy, but there's opportunity to restore ownership. Mayb

Reading this thread, someone needs to put the home server in a tiny box, preinstalled with all the apps and put a slick user interface on it. I think https://umbrel.com is a thing but it's not packaged with hardware. Someth

So funny you say this. I think it's the insight of many developers including my own. I hacked together a framework that did this before the existence of GRPC. Now I'm trying to formalise it as a protocol. https://github

Vint Cerf was turning 40 the year the internet was born. That's a reminder to us folks that some of your greatest accomplishments could be achieved post 40. Silicon Valley bias is towards 20 somethings changing the world. That was not

It must be the time of the year that makes people reflect and change the trajectory of their efforts in the year to come. I'm there with you. Most people say don't call it a failure, you didn't fail, despite it feeling like t

Port knocking. This is something we did back in the day to avoid opening ports. You can basically send a sequenced set of packets to different ports that will then unlock the firewall so you can ssh in. You can get things like knockd for th

Unfortunately for those who idolised Elon, their world view is beginning to crumble. His actions are not justifiable. The way he treats people, the way he rules his companies, the way he governs his new "free speech" platform. The

It's like API indexing, I like it. I started M3O ( https://m3o.com ) with this idea of API aggregation for absolutely everything but not specifically indexing, more so providing a uniform access layer to all things with one A

I think ActivityPub isn't so much a protocol as it is an API. Doesn't matter that it has a spec, it's just something defined on top of HTTP. There' an API doc, you can implement it. Has some nice interop. Essentially Act

I think he's wrong. Honestly the idea that "social" needs a protocol isn't right. It's that services need a protocol. HTTP was about information retrieval, it wasn't about services. It was simply about renderin

Yea had similar aspirations. Someone even implemented the "Flow" concept as a Go interface. I felt like the first implementation was too complex and we never got back to it but definitely agree, it's a core primitive that nee

So my question is how you trust a service like this. I've thought of similar but each time I see someone with that solution I'm reluctant to use it. If Google or someone as big came up with that I'd have more trust in them gi

A great conversation starter. One that we continue to have and don't actively have solutions for. We should have one. We should build one. We should make it open source. We should build a community around that effort they can manage it

As someone who scaled ruby on rails in the prime era 2007-2009 I'll tell you the problems have not changed. It's very straightforward horizontal scaling followed by load balancing across multiple nodes. Load relates having enough

Yup, I was the author of go-micro. It was very much a standalone Go framework aka common interfaces grouped together for distributed systems development. By using interfaces they effectively became pluggable abstractions for infrastructure.

It goes back to, what is a framework and what qualifies as a big framework here. I think classic rails isn't the fit, but something that's an extension of gRPC definitely works. What gets handcrafted is a lot of layers around gRPC
