THIS. No one cares about regions, you just care that the app is fast and globally available. The way we did things is a relic of the past and everyone mimics it because trying to guide new user behaviour is hard. The reality is we just need

Well yes so all of this "return to office" stuff from tech companies always seems to result in backlash from engineers and the majority of discussion on HN skews to people who are outraged or are quite happy with the comfortable r

Realistically neither do files. I think it really comes down to our common abstractions. Everything is IO. For the most part shared memory maps are what drives the most performance and ease of use.

Everything as a file was an interesting architecture in the 70s. The whole system was dependent on that model so it made total sense. In the 00s and beyond I thought everything as a service was a better model. Called through an API. Basical

You have the right idea. I don't believe in federation in the way the "fediverse" is approaching it. I think distributed works but with centralised coordination. It means people have to join a network and any bad actor can be

Most of what we use now is profit seeking, everything is built to fuel an addiction and increase screen time as opposed to being a utility that benefits you. As a user the idea is that you'd actually be free from that. The technology w

Well part of that effort is that I'm working on a standard protocol for communication. But I don't think the protocol alone is the answer. It's definitely part of the solution but you need to actually build the rest of the so

I'm not really having doubts but I am trying to figure out the right way to approach this. I have spent many years writing code thinking as an engineer if I just built the technical solutions I would figure out the rest but it's c

This is it. Clean up your life. What you do in your 20s is not the same as 30s or 40s, etc. That might speak to the people you interact with as well. I was "searching" for something on reddit and other places like it. Spending tim

Do you believe slack messages are private? Or DMs on twitter? How about the content you store on Notion or Google docs. I guess what I'm saying is there's a lot of places where it doesn't matter as long as your data is stored

The 20 limit was really based on personal experience in the sense that those are 20 really high fidelity connections with people you know and interact with in a way that's more powerful than the network of 100 interrelated people. So i
