Ah, thanks for the clarification. Didn't realize you were talking about the physicist vs. priest theory.

Huh? He indeed does claim that his model unifies all the forces. The title of his paper was: "An exceptionally simple theory of everything". From: http://arxiv.org/abs/0711.0770 All fields of the standard model and gravity are unified

Andrew Mccallum's Bow library (CMU) is a very robust toolkit. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mccallum/bow/ Very high quality. Multiple people have used it for serious research.

Uncov as a reference. Boy, what has the world come to! Regardless, the arguments Uncov has against Zoho's spreadsheets are equally applicable for Google's spreadsheets too!

Actually, that's the last question that would enter my mind. First, I want to USE it, see if I enjoy it and _then_ fix any likely security issues, if at all! That's just me, though.

If you are at a fairly early stage in your start-up (< 1 year), I would suggest you focus on your product and ONLY on your product. Forget marketing, addictiveness, virality. Figure out what is the core value you want to provide to user

This is just fantastic. How do you invoke arbitrary programs with option arguments? I saw you can use dir["file.txt"].vi, what if i want to run <someprog> <someoptions> <somefile> ?

Nobody said there is. It's just a "genius hack". I don't see anything wrong with that unless he claims that as a contribution towards his thesis! As a side note, it's not immediately clear from comments like these whether the question is ge

As much as I adore Gmail, some of the recent additions seem to just slow down my browser a whole lot. Please, please don't make Gmail bloat.

Precise advice. Nothing -- absolutely nothing -- beats having a published paper at a reasonably respected conference / journal, at least for admissions in CS-related areas.

Web-based software also allows you to constantly update your software without even making the user aware that the software is getting updated. To my mind, that is one of the biggest advantages of web-based software and one of the reasons wh

I have generally felt that short programs feel more elegant and enjoyable -- as long as the "flow" of the program is clear immediately by looking at it. So PG's emphasis on brevity is correct, I think. The other problems people talk about

Yah, I can see how it sucks but unfortunately that's the way it will have to be for Arc given PG's disinclination to spend time over it. If you end up contributing a unicode fix, who knows, it might even get incorporated and others will tha

Even if the users don't care (although they very much do when their characters all show up jumbled), the conversation here in this thread _is_ very much about the coders. Saying unicode is irrelevant is pretty strong in this context and IMH
