From personal experience, MS Research (and reportedly, Yahoo Research) is an awesome place to work for researchers; lots of freedom to do what you want and push the boundaries of what's possible. What you learn there is very different from

For good science to happen, you should convince yourself about the validity of your theory / experiment as well. You are your own critic.

Hm. I tried it out, but it looks like it does not install binaries directly? I am not much of a fan of the gentoo-esque compiling; mostly because it does not help me "get things done" quickly. I am waiting forever for the ports to compile n

Couldn't have said this better myself. I have just started working on a Mac and I love the looks, but Linux is still more flexible and powerful than a Mac. apt-get is too hard to beat. Hopefully, in the near term when compiz matures well, w

I think in this case, the 25 year old does get burnt - at least a little bit. The question at this moment really is: do we let the whole economy (other saner people who had nothing to do with this mess) suffer now that the plague is spreadi

Sure it does. Try 'man ulimit' on any unix machine. Given how advanced the iPhone OS is, I doubt that managing and controlling background tasks is that hard to do. Most probably, they have just pushed it back on their priority lists to get

I used Joe Hewitt's excellent iUI library as the base, although hacked it quite extensively. Also, prototype.js is always a time saver. The hardest part about the iPhone app, I felt, was just reducing clutter.

Please let me know if you like it! I presume quite a few hackers out here are like me constantly checking hacker news on their iPhones while they are out. The pinching and zooming is great, but it gets tiring after a while; so I figured I s

Hm. good point about the HTTP response codes vs. error within xml/json. Currently, it does not produce 403 codes, and provides all error indications only in the XML/JSON data returned. In my view, it makes stuff more uniform to handle and e
