Arduino. You are writing in C but there are plenty of examples you can use to start with. The community support around Arduino is fantastic, and is a great way to get into hardware. Although somewhat overpriced, the Arduino starter kits tha

This was interesting if nothing else. Maybe its just because I just woke up, but I didn't even realise why Q1 was interesting until after I read the HN comments. Those that are saying these are all useless for practical work are wrong in my

This isn't a question that already doesn't have an answer. Researchers showed at the Common Cold Centre in London that body temperature has an impact on the likelihood of catching flu. The reasoning is that during the cold, less blood flows

This is a rather annoying trend with devices in this class. I own a half dozen otherwise excellent devices like this, each of which require a SaaS subscription to make full use of, any most of which deny me access to the raw data. I have to

I'm guessing you're quite unfamiliar with the metric system. The different types of measurements are defined in relation to one another and are thus easy to figure out, unlike the imperial system where everything is odds and ends. A kilogra

Thanks for this thoughtful reply. I think you articulated the power dynamic between tutors and students very well. I was reluctant to use the word "tutor" in my post, and picked "coach" instead, for this very reason, but I did a poor job of

I agree, money isn't the only incentive. Some people (myself included) have a passion for teaching. Money is just an extra motivator. I don't think its true that they can necessarily make more programming themselves than I can afford to pay

When I played poker (at reasonably low-medium limits) I think I paid $100/hour for coaching if memory serves me correctly. I don't mind paying for quality coaching at all. I see it as a worthwhile investment in terms of both productivity an

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like what you are doing is admirable but not along the lines of what I'm after. I don't think that there is really any weird power dynamics in this kind of coaching, at least not in my experience. On one han

I couldn't agree more. This is exactly the experience I had being coached with poker. Sometimes you get some insight or way of looking at a problem that you probably would have never worked out on your own no matter how much time you were g

This is something I'd insist on paying for. Investment in a relationship like this goes both ways, and having a coach that was not incentivized to continue would be a deal-breaker for me.

Online communities are useful, but not what I am looking for. I already have access to online communities. Coaching is different - it is more personal, more focused, and is based on a longer term relationship.

I work in a small psychology research lab in a university. I am one (the senior) of only two programmers. I work here because I am passionate about the problems I get to work on, as well as the freedoms afforded to me. Since I am in this si

I couldn't agree more with all you've said. I've been coding for a while, but only recently had the desire to want to turn it from a skill into a craft. I relish the challenges that I come up against and delight in finding solutions to them

I just watched the following video today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cku6RJPIGG8 It is about the Fog Creek offices, it's well worth the money if you are designing an office.

They are opening their DC in Sydney in Q1 next year. Cloud servers wont be there at launch but will come "in the months to follow". I'm looking forward to that too.

I appreciate this reply a lot. This type of situation is a new one for me, I guess I should just bring up the subject as a whole and see how it goes. I hope I don't run into too much resistance since it will result in a short term decrease

Thanks! I'm in agreement with you, I don't like spending a lot of time on tooling if it isn't needed. I like only very simple tools, as I find complex ones inevitably add friction in the workflow and thus end up unused.
