serious question: what is the most impressive tech that has come out of HTC R&D in recent years? (for phones)

How do you know that HTC has been losing their good engineers? Otherwise, I had long thought that this move by Google would be to bolster their manufacturing capabilities, less so a move to acqui-hire amazing engineers.

Why is this the review that is making it to the front page? There are lots of sources that have, or will have, much better insights into the phone and tech that will spur much better conversation on HN; I hope one of those surfaces, too.

I feel bad for those that run this person's random digits code and gets one of the numbers in his table.

One of the most distinguishing features of the phone is the vertical orientation of the backside cameras --- anyone else realize this is likely because their forward facing sensor bar is likely in the way if the backside cameras were horizo

"various" is a crazy simplification: the propogation of radiation (think modeling wifi antenna output, on-chip photonic components, etc.), thermal properties of various electrical objects (think like exact temerature distribution

I used to think the same about being "good enough", but unfortunately my nexus 5x still struggles to give me a day of battery life, despite the fact that I only check e-mail and chat on it. It's slowness is a little annoying,

Since GM owns a bit of Lyft equity, is it not weird that Lyft is doing this? Maybe this is a sign that Cruise is quite far behind, and the best Lyft can do to prepare for the future (whether with Waymo or GM) is to use Waymo tech? People ar

I'm surprised this is so up-voted, but I guess it's the general opinion here at hackernews. Is there any real data out there on this? Talking to 10 drivers in one region of the US seems like a far cry from the kind of information

I should have mentioned something earlier, but I totally agree, and I'm not sure why these things happen on human timescales. =/. Looks like no one answered with a detailed-enough response to 100% understand it, but maybe that

I find it less silly and more just vacuous. Virtually every new idea has people who doubt it.

Not to hijack this thread (ok, maybe to hijack this thread), does anyone know how Qualcomm is doing? It always seemed to me that their processors never really caught up to Apple's tech (with almost all benchmarks), and I was wondering

Can you make phone calls with a Google Home yet? If not, it seems like an oversight. (Google has lots of VOIP infrastructure, right? They have Google Voice, which seems to have risen from the dead over the past 6ish months...)

What do you mean by "It is $5/mo for accounts with less than $1000, but you're not going to get better than that at a bank."? Aren't there lots of banks that charge nothing even if you only have <$1000?

I can't speak for your iPhone or the wifi software version on it, but the problem is kind of tough --- your phone would want to generally avoid hopping around different networks if it can get a decent connection from one, and it's

The way it works is that following: to check if wifi is in range, the only thing you can do is ping 'arthur you there?' to the router and wait for a response. That wait time, unfortunately, is long on human timescales. Also, there
