It's really humbling to see what people in different living circumstances take for granted. Apparently privacy is the fundamental right only for the people who can afford a $700+ device.

Or maybe buy a Android phone and flash AOSP without Play Services. As much as I like privacy, I am not tempted to buy a $700+ device which seems to be getting costlier and gimped with each new version.

Linking the logo at the top to the product's homepage is fine, but IMO linking to it every time you mention it is going very overboard.

You can do what I do with my phones. Root it and install a AOSP based rom and skip flashing the Gapps packages. For app store you can use F-Droid and Yalp. Most of the Google apps have pretty usable FOSS alternatives.

Site seems to be down right now. I am getting the generic Laravel "Whoops, looks like something went wrong." page.

I live in Bangalore and I'd say he's correct. Bangalore might be better compared to other Indian cities, but nowhere near the level of a American city. There are issues with power outages, water quality/shortage, absurd traff

To be fair, Essential didn't know who their niche target was (headphone jack haters maybe?). At least Librem 5 has very distinguishing features.

It's a niche phone, meant for a specific demographic. Not everything has to appeal to the lowest common denominator to be a success.

Err...have you tried Yotaphone? They are coming up with a second iteration. Someone will probably hack it to use the secondary e-ink display to show whatever you want.

Considering I mentioned low end specs in the parent comment, I think I'll go with 'niche audience' and 'cheap' :)

I can still type faster on physical keyboards. But the two other noteworthy advantages were 1. Ability to use the phone as a emulator machine. I had a Xperia X10 Mini Pro few years back. I used for playing Snes, Genesis, GBA/C, NES gam

KeyOne seems to be selling well, I hope they release some cheap PKB phones in the future. Even if it has low-end specs, if it is less than $300, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Not really. Manufacturers just stopped making phones with PKB because since Apple wasn't making them, they weren't worth it. It hard to estimate the demand for PKB phones when no one is making them. I'd buy one in heartbeat i

I am from India, where the representation of women in the tech field is pretty good. I don't know about any other countries, but at least here, for most of the middle/lower middle class families, "CS/EC engineering"

The Gizmodo article omits several of the links to various studies that the actual memo makes. Even though the article actually mentions this, I doubt many people will actually will make the effort to know what those references were. And to

Most of the recently flagged submissions were related to the diversity memo. I don't mind if fluff articles from dailydot are removed. But then when a verbatim copy of the memo was posted, and even that was flagged. I highly doubt that

That's just abuse of the flagging system. I don't get why people want to hide something that they don't agree with from everyone's eyes. Why not just ignore the post if you don't want to participate in the discussio

FYI you can view dead/flagged submissions by going to your profile and enabling showdead. I don't know if this is the correct place to criticize HN's moderation policies, it's kinda disheartening to see the list of submi

Is there a secret area on HN where people worship CSS/JS with blind faith? Because whichever post related to it I visit, there's a healthy dose of skepticism, especially in Electron/ReactNative/AnyOtherJSWrapper posts. F

Is it available OTC in India? I've tried a few places in Bangalore, but all of them asked for a prescription. Even online, NetMeds requires a proof of prescription before you can buy it.
