Yes, I agree! However, I think move semantics and standardization of RVO/Copy Elission have been crucial to make value-semantics work at scale.

C++ is vast and diverse, but if you have interest in functional programming you may actually end up enjoying C++, since thanks to it's value types and it's imperfect albeit powerful type system (it's a bit like a compile-time

For another approach: I built a didactic text editor to teach "value oriented design" and immutable data-structures in C++: https://github.com/arximboldi/ewig It's design is covered in these talks: - Pos

They could allow you to login without a smartphone using a SMS confirmation code, as many other services do. But I guess they consider dumbphone users with computers too much of a niche.

Yes, same (also in Germany). I survive, can't complain too much, I prefer the advantages of not having a smartphone. But for example my neighbours have organized a WhatsApp group, which is nice, for stuff that goes on in the building

As someone that does not have a smartphone, WhatsApp and Signal are really annoying because they are the two apps that can not be used without one (even though they have desktop apps). Telegram and FB Messenger and Hangouts at least can, bu

Travis "free drugs" mode worked for a while. I got used to it via my open-source projects and ended up having a couple of clients pay for it for some of my commercial work. Since their acquisition they have just been going downhil

That's a tricky question. Large C++ codebases often have a lot of "legacy" that does not necessarily reflect the best practices. A couple of years ago I wrote a text-editor to have a realistic example of what I consider a nic

This is so true. It is always Windows people trying to bend libraries to make them easy to "install" for them. On Unix installing libraries system-wide was never too much of a hassle, and now with Nix you can have reproducible d

Very interesting! In the context of C++ some of us have been calling these programming/design principles "Value Oriented Design". Some talks on the topic: - Most Valuable Values (Juan Pedro Bolívar) https://www.you

This looks pretty cool! I am actually shopping for a GUI framework for a new project and WebAssembly support is a potential critical feature. Does someone know if WebAssembly support is available on the open-source Qt? Also: is it one of t

There is some truth to that. I write a lot of performance intensive interactive software (music software, graphics software), and use C++ for that. However, you can bring a lot of the FP into C++ world, use it when appropriate, and reason

AFAIK std::vector does use memcpy (std::copy as well) when objects are trivially copyable.
