I used Gentoo a while ago, and I did enjoy the experience, but found the culture and system to be a bit mired in old stubborn tradition. An interesting fork-ish project is Exherbo, which is basically Gentoo but much lighter (in architecture

Interesting. I wonder if anyone has built (or it would make any practical sense) a distributed silent bot net not for DDoS of websites but rather of math . Imagine a small, otherwise-benign virus which simply spends some of your CPU cycl

Some excellent points here. The inflexibility of the auth page and the anti-"magic" stuff really hit home.

This five thousand times. This is precisely my sentiment on the matter. I'm not such a fanboy as to believe Apple's infallible, but I do firmly believe they'll know when they've screwed up. You can bet there are plenty

Said no one at Apple ever? I'm being facetious of course, but really, Apple changes their designs up on the regular, even if it isn't "broken". See: the iMac product line.

I thought about this too, but then realized it's a completely moot point unless you are black/white color blind (which virtually nobody is). Differing colors are NOT being used to indicate differing actions. They're just bein

That really doesn't offer feature overlap with FileVault2's full disk encryption. Though using TC is a great alternative for specific disks and folders -- not an entire system from preboot through log-in.

This. I didn't say anything on the Brython post from yesterday, but I certainly wasn't very impressed having seen it at least twice before on HN and what with the dozens of foo-to-JS transcompilers that have been cropping up lately. I didn'

Because when you're not operating at significant scale, or have certain specific use cases, it's a fantastically elegant solution and one that's very quick and easy to set up. I have used mongodb for a number of smaller projects, and I have

I really don't understand what your service does. Nor do I understand what it is offering that I can't do already with a simple few-line Makefile. We're developers. Saying "it does X" means much less than "it does X by Y". How exactly doe
