Let's approach this from another angle. Lets say you have two equal founders, one business guy and one tech guy. Then let's say the business guy becomes CEO. What title does the tech guy have? What are the tech guy's responsibilities? Let's

I really enjoyed the distinction between languages based on turing machines and languages based on lambda calculus. I'd had a fuzzy idea of the distinction before, but this article set it out clearly.

I take a different stance as well. I want a non-SQL RDBMS. I want transactions and declarative queries, etc, just without the brain-dead SQL syntax and string manipulation to write a query.

One easy example is FP in low level, performance sensitive code. There are many algorithms where there is an FP implementation that is almost as fast as the imperative, mutable state version, but there are several algorithms with no known e

The corollary to this is extremely important: Every paradigm has a place where it doesn't belong. OO, FP and whatever flavor of the month all have places where they shine, and places where they don't. And arguably, it's more important to kn

My problem with the first point - Make them Design Something - is that design is a lot harder to grade than the second two. It's easy to see if someone can write fizzbuzz, or find the bug, but it's significantly harder to grade a design. Go

Well, I can't comment about running barefoot, but I can comment about running in traditional running shoes vs. running in cleats. When I first started playing ultimate frisbee, I used running shoes because that's what I had. I got shin spli

I'm new to web development, and I keep asking this question but I've never heard and answer to it: What's stopping us from making a tool that parses HTML/CSS and points out constructs that are known to be bad in certain browsers? Sort of li

Given that I applied to cap factory and got denied, I suspect the latter. :-) From what I saw, they appear to be looking for more polished startups, and their application process does not have the same focus on finding talented hackers that

(to imitate sibling poster @roc) I'd rather reduce the overhead of gathering information, so I can think about the actual problem rather than think about where I'm going to acquire the information.

My point was that the correlation between SAT and IQ is not perfect; I said nothing about its usefulness for college admissions. You also imply that there is a single 'motivation' scale. There isn't. I am highly motivated at my startup and

I can say that I got bored during my SAT test. At the time, I was taking AP Calculus (which I also found easy), and the SAT was testing pre-calc. I sped through the answers just to get out of there. If I had actually cared, I'm pretty sure

This locks vs. STM debate is a lot like the old malloc vs. GC debates. "Look at my fancy new Java code. I just do foo = new Foo(); and everything is taken care of" and then a C++ guy responds with "so? I can do foo = new Foo(); delete foo;
