This is an awful story. One thing that seems glaringly obvious: the police does NOT need additional snooping powers on the Internet - they simply have to learn to use what's already available. Yet, politicians will likely soon claim that t

This is aimed at elementary and high school students, not at CS students. Java may be an acceptable choice for introduction to programming in CS programs, but that is not the purpose of that software which aims to introduce programming ,

It`s not a Java hate comment: I'm writing this as an educator with 20 years teaching experience who has learned that some languages are better teaching ones than others. Java has its place ... but another language would be better suited th

A really nice idea ... but why, oh why did they have to choose a language that has a lot of extra scaffolding like Java instead of something simpler like Python, or Ruby?

Tried the test to define unique. Wrote def unique(s): return list(set(s)) and it gave assertion errors. Nice presentation ... but incorrect Python implementation.

This is just a marketing ploy - otherwise, the ingredients and instructions as to how to make it would have been provided for free on the blog. And no, I don't buy the excuses that have been made as to why the list of actual ingredients can

Lots of men die of old age with prostate cancer, not because of it. Breast cancer is a far deadlier disease, one that strikes more young people, women and men (rate of incidence about 1% that of women).

Many (most?) interpretations of quantum mechanics do not involve a "collapse" of the wavefunction. The Copenhagen interpretation, which is the oldest and better known, does, but the many-worlds interpretation (which I dislike), which is fav

You're over thirty? I'm over fifty. And I have seen huge change in my every day life due to advances in communication. I still remember the first time I used email (summer of 82) and the first time I had a "chat" with a friend of mine wh

No, not at all. I'm saying that the elistist attitude described by edw is what got the field in the situation that it is in. Dismissing these new initiatives is, in effect, saying that the status quo is acceptable.

Just glanced through it and did not see the question of the speed of other massless particles (e.g. possibly neutrinos) adressed. They talk about an infinite bare velocity and that the finite speed of photons is due to multiple interaction

Excellent point and, furthermore, not only figuring out your boss's motivation is essential, but finding an effective way to communicate is just as crucial. What you did by sitting down with him and showing the difference in a text editor

I looked at the video; did not register for it. I've been working for a while at a very similar idea (basically porting rur-ple, another Karel clone which I wrote 8 years ago, to the web) ... but I intend for it to be free. Kudos for you

First of all, correlation is often not causation: you can't draw a causal link between the decline in violence and gun ownership. If you compare with other developed countries, it will be very clear that the U.S. has a lot more violence in
