... if you want to take a US-centric view of things, then that last statement is correct I suppose... but not everyone is subject to US laws - including, unless I am grossly mistaken, the person you refer to.

I'm in Canada and I can completely understand the sentiments that led to the creation of this site. However, I fear that this may lead to HN_Asia, HN_South_America, HN_Oceania, etc., making it extremely difficult to stay on top of good int

This appears to be some sort of phishing site. I first look at it using an iPad with the built-in Safari. Since the font size was too small (can't help it, I'm old!), I tried to pinch and enlarge and the text transformed into a blurry ima

"You've opted out, but you can opt in at any time." I am really surprised that the majority of readers of HN have not opted out from being tracked.

Codecademy appears (for now) to be entirely free - which is not the case at all for Codeschool.com. To me, a free site is "way cooler" (to use your expression) than one that requires a fairly pricey monthly subscription.

Premature launch? Linear algebra: only Khan academy videos. Relativity: nothing. Various other topics in Physics: nothing. Seriously, you have a long way to go before you can even approach Google, not to mention some already existing p

Sorry for stating the obvious but, Postdoc == Post-doctoral (fellowship). So, of course you can't get one without having doctoral degree. However, it is sometimes possible to work as a research assistant and end up doing very similar wo

What about non-U.S. citizens who will be affected by SOPA and do not have a congressional representative to lobby? This boycott is much larger than you seem to think - and, because of its global scope, should be given more thoughts.

Do you have millions to spend lobbying Congress? If not, you can do the next best thing: protest in any way that can hurt financially (even in a tiny way - it all adds up) companies that CAN and DO lobby Congress.

As a registrar that does business internationally, it may seem (to an American) that it is appropriate for them to be patriotic ... but it is certainly not a good way to continue appealing to international consumers. The Internet should be

HN is solely responsible for this I love HN. But that statement is myopic and over the top. I believe that Reddit started the discussion on a boycott. At the very least, much discussion took place there.

Nice reformulation. It would be right in some contexts ... but, to me (and I am not a programmer by trade nor do I work in the field), the original quote is explicit enough that I would trust the person saying it to know what they are talki

Words like "evil" get thrown around rather too quickly, imo. Paraphrasing the above: I really hate seeing companies charging for door locks. Security of your house is something so essential, forcing people to pay in order to be safe is jus

You might want to add rur-ple ( http://code.google.com/p/rur-ple ); it is similar to Guido van Robot (and was inspired by it). However, 1) it uses Python (instead of a more limited, Python-like inspired language); 2) it has more lessons an
