I am impressed by McMaster's search engine : every product is standardised and the search options really works. Amazon should really take note, their search engine is stuck at Stone age.

Imagine if such an issue appeared in a non-techy-area, it could go unnoticed for years.

It's because of behavior like this that future Microsoft RCEs may be sold on the black market instead.

I love how Carmack worried about a single frame of input lag, while most modern games have easily >7 frames lag. I expected time would have solved the issue, but it's 2020 and it's worse every year. Same with GUIs.

Great work! I wish we were in an alternate reality where websites were still blazing fast and KISS. Just like Wikipedia and Craigslist.

Can't wait to see people programming bots to send 10^4 emails per day, and autorefresh pages on loop to increase their "productivity score" and get a raise

I don't understand how Notion pages take 2+ seconds to load on 12-core machine with a gigabit connection. And you can't load multiple pages at once, it has to be in focus!

One of the killer-features of RISC-V was being backdoor-free, but it appears that chinese companies will produce most of the chips. Back to square one. This is a pipe dream, but having self-managed local foundries (à la hackerspace) would b

The thread describes a bug indeed, but the feature really exists. Quoting the Android SDK reference : "FLAG_SECURE [...] Treat the content of the window as secure, preventing it from appearing in screenshots" [1] Try to screenshot

This is a feature: FLAG_SECURE is real and used by many apps. i.e. Chrome's Incognito mode. Sure, you have workarounds for power-users, but Google is locking the Android ecosystem progressively for regular users. Just like the Manifest

On a similar register, multiple French power plants were scouted by unidentified drones in the past 5 years. Transformers are an fragile point of failure of an entire country infrastructure. I hope security has improved since then.

"But Amazon showed losses for years" is probably the most used argument of the decade to defend unprofitable startups. Palantir is 17 years old.

I agree a lot on the increasingly bloated software. Even if Moore's law dies, we still have >20 years of software improvement to do !

We tend to forget the damage that porn causes to young minds. If this law fails to educate on pornography, at least it'll educate youngsters on DNS. I'm ok with both scenarios.

That's why I'm so happy that HN stayed roughly the same : fastest UI in the west, respectable community, and non-profit. Just like Wikipedia and Craigslist. I wish we had an equivalent for every big website.

I bet that after this recession, at least one western country will try UBI at large scale within 20 years. We'll learn a lot.

Elon's speech pertinence was exceptional in the 2010s, but his last 12 months were really chaotic (pedo-sub, tesla-tweets-420 and "it's just a flu" scandals). I guess that working 100h weeks takes a toll on your brain. F

Interesting how the AI turns "wouldn't get" into "never gonna give" at 0:15, maybe because of overfitting ?

I wonder why this problem hasn't been resolved yet, considering we had NLP systems capable of this for a decade now. Maybe it's too hard to scale to production. Or Pagerank is still better most of the time. Or plain old monopoly
