I’m not really sure what you mean. There are Himba people on the internet, of course. But there just aren’t that many of them in the world period, and there aren’t exactly a ton of non-Namibians who know any. And I thought it was implied, b

Unless “bushmen” is being used in some generic “people who live out in the bush” sense? That stuck out to me too. (I’m very closely connected to one of the foremost Western experts on the Himba and have spent time with them myself. Definite

It doesn't take much to get "day one" access like he's describing. I was some random kid with a couple years of (completely self-taught, solo, using free tools) Mac OS X dev experience in 2008, and I had beta access to t

Yep, they explicitly mentioned (and showed, IIRC) that you can connect game controllers to the Vision Pro. Presumably it will indeed be PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch controllers, as well as the various third party controllers specifically s

I am an engineer, though not at all involved in materials science/engineering, and I've known what galvanic corrosion is since I was a teenager. It's not exactly an obscure phenomenon.

I will very likely buy one. I don't need it, or any field recorder really, although I do already own a "regular" Sony field recorder that I use occasionally, but not professionally. I'll buy it because I love well made,

A sous vide device makes it easy to hold a water bath at a precise enough temperature that I get C41 results at home that are indistinguishable from my local lab, at least to my eyes.

There used to be many of these facilities. This is the last one. The demand has gone down as OCR has gotten better and hand addressed mail volume has decreased.

I’m a software engineer, live in an area with a way lower cost of living than the Bay Area, work for a company almost exactly the same size, and $191k would be a significant pay cut for me. It really isn’t a lot depending on your role, leve

That's a bit of a simplification of what the article reports, which is that desert lions were there before being driven out by nearby farmers in 2002. They came back because of the drought and lack of non-marine prey. Seems likely th

I'm lucky in that the family I married into is strongly connected to Namibia. My wife lived there when she was young, and her family goes back regularly, so I've been able to tag along with them. Getting introduced to that place -

I visited the Skeleton Coast in 2021 for a couple days. It's just an incredible other-worldly place (well lots of Namibia is like that, really). I had no idea at the time that lions had started coming back. There's a massive colon

I use my iPhone for productivity. I’ve never felt the need to filter notifications. It does seem like a nice feature. But “nobody would put up with it” is pretty hyperbolic.

He was writing in the context of Windows vs Mac 20 years ago. At that time especially, the overwhelming majority of people who really cared deeply about UI design used and designed for Macs, despite the overall small size of the Mac market.

I like John Gruber and usually agree with him. But his anti-remote work thing is baffling, and made even more so by the fact that he himself has worked from home for going on 20 years.

I love this analogy and it’s the same one I use when people dismissively ask me why I do Morse code, shoot film (including large format), print in the darkroom, listen to reel to reel tape, etc. It’s not that I’m a Luddite. I’m an audio
