In fairness, AFAIK, Apple invented the i * phenomenon. Other companies taking advantage of that catchy naming format feels so cheap to me that I could hardly care less about their actual rights on paper.

I don't necessarily agree to saying that the mind works by mental tricks, but that's mostly semantics. I do think it's generally better to operate by intention, and I also think that those intentions should be based on sound values and rigi

The point is that what should motivate you is your ultimate goal or dream, not a mental trick.

But the scientific reality is aesthetics too. Seeing how the snowflake is a textbook example of beauty found in nature, I would personally find myself obliged to represent the snowflake according to it, even for the purpose of your applicat

This 3D creation is impressive, but the original Mandelbrot set has far deeper impact on me [not parent poster]. Since I was a kid I've been fascinated by these forms; by the infinite intricacy, the simultaneous multilevel self-similarity -

I've always been frustrated by this. I realize that as a landscape architect there are aesthetic choices and perhaps for park lovers those shortcut trails can ruin a scene; personally I think there's a certain, non-dismissible, beauty in th

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft supplied that material themselves. Macs are good-looking computers (and with its minimal design, in a sense, appropriately generic) and Windows 7 runs on computers. Potential Windows 7 buyers probably do

I'm trying to imagine the optical effect of looking at such a device. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the physics, but if it's anything like that picture it must be quite a fascinating distortion of the visual scene. Not only completely black at

This kind of scares the shit out of me. To me, the human condition seems like a very fragile thing; more so than many seem to appreciate. With predictions like Mr Kurzweil's, I wonder and worry that our possibilities will grow too large too

I've heard (can't find a source) that Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of most Nintendo's hit titles) personally has a lighthearted stance to the whole emulator/ROM scene and basically thinks it is nice that people still play the games.

That James Bond analogy sure got me convinced... Of course if sales are bad you have to reinvent yourself and take crazy risks. But wackiness as an incubator? I don't understand that conclusion.

The hypothesis fails to explain why this adaption is unique to humans. Lice probably was just as big of a problem for other animals in similar habitats as it was for humans. The question is what element in human evolution made the benefit o

Why would you want to back up Gmail? I bet Google already backs it up, at different geographical locations even I dare say. Just in case... well, in case of what exactly? A fire? Earthquake? In case they decide to delete your mail account?

I've read Paul Graham's essays and followed his projects ever since I stumbled upon his essay on Java (as an ambitious teenager dreaming of hacking), but I've never actually heard him talk. I was surprised, gathering from the manners of exp

In C/C++ I have longed for a parametrized break statement with value indicating number of nested loops to break at once. I'm sure this goes against some kind of lambda calculus CS ethos though.

I don't like the way this article presents the viewpoint of evolutionary psychology. A conception such as morality vs evolution is nothing short of dangerous. I think this is a probable scenario: "Oh, look, a wallet. I wonder what's inside.
