A couple of years ago I proposed a decentralized dead-tree archival network using time capsules and a shared location map. I've made a few capsules already. http://carlos.bueno.org/2010/09/paper-internet.html http://www.wired.com/beyond_

I didn't realize this technique had a name. I usually start with a name or a piece of dialogue, and grow the story like a crystal, eg: "Things come and go, but Ampere's Law will always be current."

We use a similar method at Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150212498738920 If I had to guess, I'd say that since route 53 is a dns host for many domains, they might be able to work out the user ip / resolvers map pass

I'm definitely conflicted. OTOH, people commissioning art "in the style" of more expensive artists is as old as art itself. Pixel for pixel replicas is only a difference in degree.

... So instead of paying the original artist for a print, or asking them if they might consider a cheaper run (artists are just guessing too!) you paid someone else to counterfeit you an "original"? You are proud of this?

There are fleets of cable ships all over the world who are paid a retainer to repair breaks. When losses are calculated in tens of thousands of dollars a second (edit thousands per minute) it's worth it. On the off time they pull up and scr

It shows up in the tools. I had to enable every. single. little. country. in the iTunes publisher tool separately. It took about 3 minutes per country, times something like 25 countries. There was no "this is global" checkbox. (As an aside,

I recently read an essay by an advisor to Mario Vargas-Llosa's failed campaign for the presidency of Peru. Brilliant writer, bad speaker. [0] Being one of the greatest writers alive, Vargas-Llosa was good at giving voice to the people's dis

I don't even bother to look at my iTunes sales anymore. I just assume it's 1/10 of my Amazon sales. But what is Amazon doing that is predatory? Genuinely curious. Simply having a monopoly isn't a crime; abusing the advantage is.

For a good nerdy time, check out the first implementations of glob and regexp. 20 years on they still work in modern Pythons. Soon after Guido decided to make globs a special case of regexp, and his elegant recursive code was no more. http

I don't know. I don't think it exists yet. But have you ever seen an expert using etags/search/debugger/etc to bounce around a large codebase? The location of the functions in the file hierarchy doesn't matter at all. The important graph --
