Nix supports CMake fine. In my experience adding new packages is not too hard as long as they're not GnuCash 2.6 ;) Any change will lead to a new output folder, there is no option of reusing them. Why not just give it a try in VirtualB

If you can use C++, give Intel TBB a try. It has a lot of structured primitives but still makes it easy to just parallelize a for loop.

One quote stuck with me: “But it’s a tough place to do time. People that say cons have it easy, they ain’t never been in Menard.” Not an American, but between saying that cons have it easy and the fact of mass incarceration in the first pla

While reading the article, another possibility for reducing the cost of housing crossed my mind: Ways to make small living spaces more livable. Most of the cost of housing is land, and living in cheaper places is not that desirable - young

Löve is not a German or Swiss German word, so the umlaut is simply gratuitious. (Other languages such as Dutch or French use diacritics to mark a vowel as not-dipthongised, but that doesn't apply here either.)

It also deduplicates based on a rolling checksum (similar to rsync). Pretty cool archiver.

Smooth on my Intel (HD Graphics 5500 / Broadwell, 2015) graphics. Nvidia's GTS 450 is 5 years old, so I don't think "we are some ways away" is necessarily true, but it is of course still very wasteful.

There is a technology that allows incoming I/O data to be put directly into cache. Pretty useful! :) I think this is the original introduction: http://web.stanford.edu/group/comparch/papers/huggahalli05.p

Parent got downvoted, but I think it's a legitimate concern: refusing people rides because for whatever reason (old phone, poor / expensive Internet connectivity) they can't update the app is problematic.

According to Wiktionary, anxiety comes from Latin "ango" ("to anger" - which also has the same root!), which in turns comes from Proto-Indo-European "*h₂enǵʰ". Closely related German words are "eng" (

If you're not stuck with a huge MySQL legacy installation, Postgresql 9.4's JSONB + json_path_ops index queries seem neater. Or am I missing something?

I read this as a parable about abstracting & decomposing problems, and how lazy evaluation makes it easier. Also, about how you can write Haskell in Javascript.

Nice to have a ASCII-based REST API, but they should also add a proper binary protocol, which does not involve HTTP. Mainly to reduce parsing and encoding times. (This is my personal and not my employer's opinion.)

I'm not really a fan of MISRA-C or V process and stuff like that, but the quality of the source code and process is truly appalling if these slides are right... tens of thousands of global variables, no bug tracking and so on and so on
