Does Google not pay plenty in income tax on its employees, who in fact do generate that precious intellectual property? Looking only at taxed profits is misleading.

Of course you can hack a human driver without a gun. Just distract him with, say, a bright light, or a member of the opposite sex.

This explains Eric Schmidt's "casual" remarks about cars that should drive themselves recently at the TC Disrupt conference ( http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/28/schmidt-on-future/ ).

Indeed. Without some form of randomisation (which advertisers probably do not want), this would drastically lower the price of solving a captcha. Because you need to submit each ad to a human solver network only once, and can store the solu

If it's a sunk cost, then "throwing the money away" is maybe the best option. It isn't like it's just a little authority dispute. Reddit probably costs more than it brings in, so closing it might make financial sense, too.

1. Use GHCi to check types and ideas. 2. Write your own monads. How about a monad for (->) e? (It already exists, but so what?) That's at least the strategy that works best for me.

I think having to get a license to do business in full liability is a terrible limitation of freedom, even when it does not cost money. Taxes on business income of course are more justified, I'm complaining merely about the requirement to g

In some statically typed languages, it is possible to have an "Apples" and a "Bananas" type. And it's good to hear that you don't make "representation errors", because I do make these errors - which then blow up precisely after 3 hours of r

Java is not the only statically typed language, and some statically typed languages are almost phenomenally concise.

That's probably just a historic accident. Most modern languages have an interactive prompt now. For example Scala, as you mention. Another factor might be the availability of type inferencing, which makes interactive prompts perhaps more vi

You are confusing dynamic typing with dynamic code interpretation. So there ARE statically typed languages with a REPL, for example Haskell. And there are dynamically typed languages without a REPL - for example Perl (in the core distributi

GHC Haskell is doing surprisingly well. That must be a testament to the extremely high quality of the GHC code generator and optimizer.

When trying to do routine tasks, many of us don't necessarily want to get into a social situation. We don't want to think about how to phrase our questions, or what impression we make on the other person. A machine does not care about that.

It's possible to do without Existential Types, in fact they are only a language extension supported by GHC, not part of any standard. I think the obvious way to "simulate" existential types is with records like data MyRec = MkMyRec { op1 ::

It should be noted that Haskell's type system supports a form of dynamic typing: Existential types http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Existential_type (among other methods). Also, static polymorphic types are a superior substitute for man
