This is a great read. I'm especially surprised about what it means to be an "Average Person". "Average" or an "Average Person" now (at least amongst my social circle) is actually a bad thing, something tha

I've definitely heard of someone having the "gift of the gab", meaning they speak convincingly (I think I've only heard it used to describe sales people though).

I'm always interested to find out how people decide upon names for their projects. In New Zealand "gobby" is slang for a blow job, not sure if that makes me want to try it more or less though.

This isn't a legal opinion and shouldn't be taken as legal advice. Interestingly, I think New Zealand law does have this case covered. There's special mention of "computer-generated" works under Section 5[1] of the

Looks really cool, I just had one problem. I didn't know what "Steal This Book" is all about, and there's nothing on the landing page describing what the purpose/content of this wiki is all about except for the fact

I don't think this is actually run by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO uspto.gov), so the website owner could be risking whatever equivalent law of Passing off the United States has. I'd also be interested as t

I guess the counter example to that might be 4chan. It's difficult _to_ be recognized on 4chan, if at all. Obviously it has its "ghetto" parts (weird term, I don't fully get it) but it still manages to be a successful (a

I didn't think that the OS X license let you run it anywhere other than Apple hardware. That's just something I've heard though, never actually investigated it.

I've always felt like "Head of Community" is a weird job title. I mean, isn't a community, by definition, imply joint ownership by those in the community? Or if there must be a leader, then they have to be elected by the

Obviously this is just your opinion, but I think Brian Eno completely on point here, for music at least. The best real-world example I know is the resurgence of cassette tapes. Whenever I go to see a not-very-popular (indie, for want of a b

I think Richard Stallman is (was?) aware of this. He famously condoned Ogg/Vorbis using a BSD license so that it would be more greatly adopted by developers/companies making music players and the like. This was in the face of the

I think it's a reaction to Columbine. Didn't one of them make a Doom map? I think some time after, the news got a hold of it and sort of blamed violent video games for the mass shooting.

Sorry, yes you're right. I should've read the link I posted, I just assumed it would be the same as how its treated in New Zealand. Obviously reverse confusion is dealt differently in different parts of the world. Looks like US tr

Depends on your definition of "works". If "works" means "looks fashionable" and "impresses your peers", then the $450 shirt is works a hell of a lot better.

IANAL, but I know I do know a little bit about this stuff. Don't take this as legal advice. I'm sorry to say this, but the Apple scenario you've set out isn't always going to be true. There's a thing called "

I don't understand this. If there were no copyright, people would be able to copy everything they see anywhere and never be forced to disclose their changes like they do with the GPL, which is at least one intention of GPL. GPL relies

Personally, I find it hard to blame lawyers on the whole for this. A lawyers job is to represent their client as best as they possibly can (within the rules of the law). The best outcome for Oracle here is copyright is valid for APIs, it&#x

Totally minor point. When you're searching something that doesn't bring up any results, it's just a blank page. It should say something like "No results found" or similar.

In New Zealand this would be considered illegal. You MUST get the minimum wage if you're an employee. Even if you're contract states that 100% of your earnings are commission based, the average over every two week period MUST come
