This article points out a common problem and discusses some ways to avoid it, but http://swtch.com/~rsc/regexp/regexp1.html describes how to solve it.

It seems to me that worlds permit sharing immutable data structures, and that Warth & Kay's operations on worlds do not permit sharing mutations done in parallel worlds. The Worlds paper you cited [ http://www.vpri.org/pdf/rn2008001_wor

Yes, I've had good luck with branches for trunk, qc, and production. The production branch is always a copy of qc as it existed at some point in the past, so that guarantees that everything's been tested together and without anything extra.

I agree that functional programming and web applications fit nicely together. response = f(request) probably won't mean much to someone who has no familiarity with fp, though. http://www.ics.uci.edu/~fielding/pubs/dissertation/rest_arch...

I wondered roughly how that compared to highway costs, and I found that it's about four times as much. One thing I found was that while this article claims $700million/mile for the LA Red Line, the MTA reports that $4.5billion was spent for

Maybe I was unusually naive, and probably everyone's more informed these days, but the thing I'd add is that tech companies are very different from other companies for CS majors. I supposed in my innocence that there were the overtly-sexy a

Referential integrity in code-under-test is convenient for unit testing, so unit tests encourage (re)discovery of functional style by programmers who are working in non-functional languages. But unit tests also have value in programs that a

Contrary to what seems like the prevailing view right now, Git is not strictly better than SVN. Some reasons to use SVN are at http://blog.red-bean.com/sussman/?p=90 . It sounds like you want to use SCM in a personal (not collaborative) ca

My last job involved a lot of code review. I usually started with static analysis. Cyclomatic complexity is crude, but it seems like a reasonable heuristic for identifying important or interesting portions of the code.
