Genuine question: How are the restrictions placed by Apple on what's allowed in the App Store any different then the restrictions placed by console owners on what's published for the XBox or PS3? For example, the XBox XNA community games sy

The browser. Virtually nothing crashes the actual OS these days (be it Windows, OS X or Linux). I think I've had 1 or 2 complete OS crashes in the last 4 years.

Regardless of Job's other comments, the "Flash crashes Macs" isn't FUD by any definition. The SWF plugin is just a pretty bad bit of software. If you don't believe me, check the Firefox crash analysis for today: http://people.mozilla.com/c

The author openly conceeds the points that consumers will actually care about - performance, security, and proprietary nature. It's hard to claim that it's a "marketing trick to pull the wool over the eyes of consumers" when you agree with

This doesn't seem to be linked to any upcoming or finalised W3C/WHATWG standard. It certainly looks like a nice idea, but isn't this arbitrary introduction of non-standard features exactly what we hated IE3-6 for? Prefixing it with "moz-" d

OK, having researched, I presume you're refering to the XAuth stuff http://dev.twitter.com/pages/auth#browser-less-apps . How the frell is this any better than Basic auth for most users? I can only see that 1) I don't have to store their p

And importing a new library into my codebase is a non-trivial activity. I need to vet it, ensure it will be supported and updated, and that well, it actually works . It makes Twitter implementation from "pretty much trivial in any language

Edit: OK, I was wrong, as I'd hoped - you don't need a web browser. The rest of my post stands unchanged as, regardless of my interpretation, it kills the Twitter support I just wrote in less than an hour into one of my apps, and renders it

I see your point, but I stand by the choice - any process that actually has an group of people sit there and review your app by hand could only have been seen as "open" by very naive individuals.

Direct quote from Mike Chambers: "Because this is Flash, it is rather trivial to port games created with Flash that target the iPhone to target other operating systems, such as Android." Which pretty much sums up the entire reason for 3.3.1

Well, even if I did set it all up for them, the point is that it will happily break itself without doing anything other than the recommended updates.

I think EPSN (and porn :) are basically just video. Porn is normally at the cutting edge of tech, so I expect <video> there soon enough and I'd guess EPSN would get it once enough of their users start moaning. So, in the long term,

Fair enough, though I wonder if you really need to buy it to realise that you don't have a use for it. I suppose a trial run is reasonable, in case it has some magic use you don't consider till you have it. I'm still though, to this day, bo

Good lord. I need some kind of super-flag to hammer this kind of idiotic, vitriolic, nonsense into the nearest incinerator. Though by the tone of it someone already missed the incinerator, hit the author, and caused serious brain trauma. Be

The specifics of the post may be written in a troll-like style, but the key points are quite valid - I've had very similar experiences with Ubuntu. Running an "apt-get dist-upgrade" update last October entirely hosed support for my (pretty

I can think of only two (tenuously) justifiable reasons for this. 1 - Perhaps, during the beta, they want code written in C (and derivatives) to aid in debugging framework bugs. Rather than "My App doesn't WORK!!!!! (Using MonoTouch Vxxyy)"

Well, the browser has tabs (at least, the iPhone Mobile Safari does, so it's no stretch to think this does as well). The lack of a camera is, I agree, silly. Rather than rebut the rest of his "points" directly, I'll focus on "multitasking".

Good for you - this is the way it should (and for most sane people, does) work. You ignore the tools until you understand what they're automating. One day, you'll get bored of writing boilerplate and trying to design the best UI by compile/

If I were writing a popular URL shortener, the most useful thing I could add would be short (2 character) prefix to the random link, indicating the target type (e.g. video is foo.bla/vd12345). This fixes a pet peeve of mine, when I follow a

I'm going to assume the actual statement "Good students are good at everything" is a quote that is, at best, rather out of context. It's patent garbage; I often take classes (and advise others to take classes) in things I know I'm no good a

I've tried this approach; taking the time to give a detailed answer with reasoning behind my choices and explanations for areas that might be unclear. Two things happen: 1 - The fast, but "good enough" answer wins out for the short term 10+
