Bring up the family if you're a guy; businesses love family guys, they think it makes them more likely to stick around, etc. But if you're a woman... DON'T DO IT. It's the most sure way to not get hired (well, besides the obvious.)

I got "if you were a dessert, what would you be" on a college interview. I answered "a frozen honeydew ant" and left it at that. (It's really a dessert in some parts of the world, I swear.) I got waitlisted.

My biggest weakness is that I have no respect for authority. I work hard when I want to please someone, but the threat of punishment is the best way to get even worse work out of me. This means that many of my employers and teachers really

Google. You can usually find a torrent or something on megaupload. I just got a bunch of e-books I had been trying to take out of the library for years, unsuccessfully (all the copies were missing or somesuch; they were kind of rare.)

Blah blah blah. In Shakespeare's day, his plays were ribald entertainment for the masses. People are continuously complaining about how the old ways were better, and one is entitled to one's opinion, but the old ways are in the past and go

If it's a symptom of pop culture, then why is Middle English different from Old English? It's a symptom of language, and it's impossible to stop.

I've heard that java is both pass-by-value and reference in one class, and then heard that it was pass-by-value only in another. The difference was that the first was at a university that primarily used java, and the second was at a univer

The central problem is that people don't understand what "heritable" or "genetic" really means. Every trait you can possibly think of has a genetic basis. I.e. having green hair is heritable, because people who dye their hair funny colors

I understand the meaning, but somehow I still don't always see them. I still frequently get complained at by webforms for not filling stuff in. So again; this solution is awesome.

I am not agreeable to following the "be civil" guideline. The times when I have been uncivil, I've generally been downvoted, which I think is perfectly fair. However, there are some times when I've been rather rude, and the comments ended

When I mean honest, I mean honest both literally and emotionally. If I see bullshit, then I actually call it bullshit, instead of calling it "innaccurate." While the two terms may be similar in meaning, they are not equivalent.

I'm assuming this is a different Erlang Day than the one I was here for, as I'm still a noob. (And on that note, how many have there been? And can we pick another language for subsequent days plz?)

"Be civil. Don't say things you wouldn't say in a face to face conversation." I certainly don't say things on HN that I wouldn't say in a face to face conversation, but that's because I'm honest offline as well as on (read: not civil). It

This is exactly the reason why most folks will never program; not because they don't have the capability to be competent, but because we have this odd culture around programming. There's this belief that CS is something that you have to

The comment above you (well right now) indicates that women are less experienced coming into introductory classes. It makes sense that they'll have a higher failure rate, as it's difficult to compete against people who know more than you.

I actually agree that it might not be a problem for computer science to not have women in the field. It's really more of a problem for women who want to be in the field. If you had asked, 40 years ago, "why is the lack of women in math,
