The only paper I've read on this (and I unfortunately can't find it) suggested that students who go to pre-school, as opposed to those who go straight to kindergarten, have a higher rate of behavioral problems. Of course, that's for ALL pr

I'm sorry, I really dislike this answer. Obviously this guy knows that he should love his kid. He was looking for specific answers on how to introduce the kid to computing. And you gave him this glib, content-less, greeting card answer.

Is this a request for input? I personally haven't come across any "rate my start-up" posts I'd considered spammy, but maybe that's because the measures that are currently being taking have been effective (marking as dead, lack of upvotes fo

I'm not going to vote. It's not rational. It's a lot of effort and my vote is proportionately very small and therefore can have no effect. EDIT: Whoever downvoted this, YOU are the reason that HN is going to pot. You may not like that

I had three student loans, and I am doing it the mathematically correct way. I paid off the second-largest with the highest interest rate before it came out of deferment, and am currently working on 2 and 3, putting all the spare cash into

I've taught a fairly large introductory course, and every exam we'd have maybe 1-5% of the class taking a 1.5 or double length exam in a separate room, depending on the severity of their "disability." I'm not an expert or anything, but all

Yes. The paleolithic diet excludes grains for the reason that it was not included in the Stone Age human's diet. If Stone Age humans did have refined starches in their diet, then if you wanted to follow a truly paleolithic diet you would e

Agreed. I think downvoting starts a revenge cycle, and the methods that are in place to prevent revenge only make the revenge less direct. For instance, you can't downvote replies to your comment, but you can go into their user history and

Right, and there's a lot of good research into why people become criminals, and most do not do it because they're thrill seekers. Instead, it mostly has to do with their expected costs and benefits, just like any other choice. If one comes

Agreed. I'd even go a step further and say the number itself is meaningless. What's the sample size? The stand. dev.? But most importantly, the sampling method sucks.

I take the opposite approach. Why should I spend $10/lb on tenderloin beef when I can get tip steak for $3.50/lb? It goes in one end and out the other. At least a good office chair will last you years and possibly even save you back issue

Spoilage has nothing to do with what's "left to spoil." Cooked ramen noodles will spoil just as readily as udon. Bacteria need moisture to grow. Udon is sometimes sold fresh (wet), and that will spoil. Dry udon does not spoil. As for pal

This could be true for humans in general, if humans weren't products of evolution. Ever notice that anyone who writes blog posts about babies on HN are absurdly pro-baby? It's because we wouldn't pass on our genes if we weren't. It's poss

Another thing to add re: age is that the father's age generally tracks the mother's age, (plus a constant) and that is optimized downward. Even women who are 25 show a decrease in fertility and increase in birth defects over those who are
